Meet Mimi Basseri of Mimi A La Mode in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Basseri.

Mimi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Mimi A La Mode was established in San Francisco in 1989 with a black and white stripe shower cap with a big bow and daisy flower. (Located in Los Angeles since 2004!)

I wanted to make sure that I would look pretty while taking a shower, just in case my BF peeked behind the shower curtain. He never did do that because he was a perfect gentleman but the pretty shower cap came into being.

I had gotten the idea to add a bow after seeing Madonna’s borderline video and obsessing about Coco Chanel.

At the time I had been studying fashion design at San Francisco State and had thought I would go into fashion for petite ladies but the shower caps took me off in a different direction.

My friend worked at I Magnin Department Store in the buying office. She suggested that I come in and show them the shower caps. She was already a wearer and fan of the shower caps!

The buyers loved them and took 2 dozen on consignment and sold out. Then they placed a real order for 144 pcs and I was in business and put the shower caps in all of the stores.

I Magnin featured me in the newspaper ads and in store events.

I set up a sewing shop of my own since the bigger contract houses would not take in my orders. I attended a small lingerie show in New York several times a year and gained international orders and mentions in the big magazines. I was asked to create a prettier sleep mask in my pretty print fabrics and we did one with a ruffle that was very feminine and functional. That style in black satin was worn by Sarah Jessica Parker on Sex and the City in an opening scene. Kind of a big thing at the time.

As time went by we added spa wraps and Malibou trimmed flip flops etc. to create a head to toe look of the Mimi A La Mode glamour girl..

Today our business is mostly online as we produce our line here in the US.

Most of the luxury stores we sold to have closed.

Our own store on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood was beautiful featuring our line as well  as fragrance and a romance department.

Since I closed the store in 2009, I have been focusing on creating new designs for Mimi A La Mode that have the vintage beauty feel that I love so much.

I am also in the process of creating a sewing and craft book for pretty lingerie and accessories..

In the Fall, I plan to start volunteering at the Career Center at LATTC a local job search organization.

I will hold presentations to help job seekers groom and dress properly to gain confidence in preparation of their interview. As well as Dress For Success.

For now we service our online customers at mimialamode.com

Has it been a smooth road?
Many many many obstacles and challenges!

To create and sell high quality product that people think should be the free shower cap you steal from a hotel.

To keep all the aspects of a manufacturing company running smoothly with personalities clashing. (broken sewing machines, late fabric, fussy customers scheming employees, greedy landlords…)

To keep money coming in when buyers and celebrities want you to give them things for free.

To be copied by companies big and small and people you trusted.

To be a petite nice woman in business and not being taken seriously (by both men and women).

And the disaster that was my sewing shop in Costa Rica.

To have a personal life when the business is all consuming.

Etc…

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mimi A La Mode – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Mimi A La Mode is a design house of bed and bath accessories located in Los Angeles CA. We manufacture luxurious shower caps sleep masks spa wraps satin pillow cases for an upscale customer.

The shower caps are our best-selling item and come in a variety of fabrics prints and styles that appeal to women of all ages.

They come from an inspiration of the vintage starlets following a beauty routine like the days in old Hollywood.

I am proud of the process of taking an idea and creating from scratch a beautiful product selling it and getting it into the marketplace.

Then the customer is delighted to purchase it and use it in her daily routine. So the result is that the ladies that wear our things feel pretty sexy and young (as one of my elderly customers described to me once).

To help women feel good was my original goal when I set out to launch my company way back then.

What sets our company apart is that I really was the first to do many of these accessories that are now totally mainstream knockoffs. That is why I call myself “The Shower Cap Queen!”

Very tongue in cheek of course!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Early on, I always have been drawn to cities.

First San Francisco then LA I suppose the future will be New York City.

I love the Palm Trees the wild parrots the West side and the Metro trains.

I don’t like when drivers here don’t yield when I am crossing the street at a crosswalk!

And these new crazy hot Summers!
