Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Arevalo.
Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I used to own a boutique Staffing Agency for eight years in Woodland Hills. I decided to become a stay-at-home mom when I had my two sons, so I put my staffing agency business on-hold. For three years, I was solely a Stay-At-Home mom which I really enjoyed.
Eventually, I had the desire to have my own business again. That is how Playdate Connection got started. I wanted to start a business where women, who were business owners, can still network and grow their business while bringing their children at the same time.
Playdate Connection started in 2015. Since then, we have empowered a community of business owners to build their network through our events without having to find babysitters for their kids. Our events got so popular that venues were starting to reach out to Playdate Connection to hold all types of events in the Los Angeles community.
We have organized a wide range of different types of events for the public at our client venues such as business networking meetings, princess tea parties, superhero parties, cooking classes, parent education classes, nature play dates, art and craft events, technology classes for kids, family festivals and more!
Therefore, we have evolved into—“A company that organizes quality events by partnering and showcasing local businesses.”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been an interesting road. There are always roadblocks when you start a business, especially with starting a business that is a brand new concept.
In the beginning, the idea of bringing their children to business networking events was something that was not done too much. Hence, the concept needed to be communicated to the kid-friendly venues where we hold events. Some challenges that I come across is we need to let businesses know that we can’t do things for free.
Playdate Connection needs to be compensated for all of the value we bring to business owners (like promotion and event organizing). We had to let businesses know that they have to invest money in working with us. However, once we have set-up that expectation, the right businesses are able to partner with us in being involved in our events.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Playdate Connection – what should we know?
Playdate Connection is a community platform where family-oriented businesses are able to reach out to the community through our events. In essence, we are putting different pieces of the puzzle together by joining multiple businesses to collaborate in an event.
We are known for harnessing a robust and proprietary promotional method to build awareness of the companies that are involved in a project. Also, we are very well-known for conceptualizing an event and carrying the vision into fruition. Being able to be an effective tactician takes a lot of work because there are a lot of small details that need to happen to make an event work.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being able to be fluid in how to make your business work is very important. If something is not working, then you need to evolve into being a business where your strengths are best utilized. I feel a quality that has been important to our success is our perseverance and being able to evolve.
