Meet Maria Lopez of Hija De La Agua in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Lopez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Maria. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I go by Hija De La Agua and I’m a Xicana Bruja, Energy Worker and Reiki Master. Hija De La Agua means Daughter of the Water, I connect to a lot of different elements but water energy is one element that I feel very strong about. I don’t label my witchcraft because there’s a variety of things that I do, but I would have to say I’m an Eclectic Solitary Bruja.

When I was a little kid I would make wishes and manifest things by speaking them into the wind, I also saw spirits from a very young age. When I was a teenager, I started reading with playing cards and my dad took me to a botánica in Tijuana to pick out my very first Tarot deck because he said I had a gift. I started reading for family and friends. I come from a catholic family, I’m not religious, I’m spiritual. My parents didn’t mind that I did readings. When I was about 14/15 years old, I started doing spells, word got around at school that I was a witch, so I would read palms and get paid to support my back then love for Hot Cheetos lol, even the teachers knew, and yes I read their palms too! In my late teens early 20’s I would read at events and fundraisers, this is how I became comfortable reading for a lot of people and I loved it! By the time I was in my 30’s, I left my hairdressing career to go work at a Psychic shop. Eventually, I ended up getting sick and having an autoimmune disease and chronic pain.

As I started seeing doctors for my health, I also wanted to heal energetically, and help my body so I took Reiki classes. I originally went with the intent of doing Reiki for myself, It helped me and I loved it so much that I ended up becoming a Reiki Master. During my healing process, I started shifting my work to center marginalized folks and create assessable offerings as well, which is how I started my own Patreon page. I wanted to create a platform where people could see videos of me doing readings, distance healings, and Witchy 101 videos or share magical knowledge for a low cost. Over time I started my Botanica which I call my “Brujtanica” (I had to add the word bruja in there lol) from home to sell at events. As my small business started growing the witchy gifts I made for friends eventually became a part of my business, so not only do I practice witchcraft, I do healing work, energy work and I also make my own witchy goodies like sprays, ritual oils, spiritual cleansing bath salts, and more. I love what I do!

Has it been a smooth road?
Having an invisible disability, I was worried that someone like me would not be accepted in the healing community because I didn’t fit this mold of what a healer should look like. I ended up doing the thing anyway. But I also had to do a lot of Inner healing myself. I used to be the kind of person that would overdo everything and I would burn myself out. I would try to make myself assessable for others because I didn’t want to say no and put my work on the line, this was when I was a hairdresser. I didn’t want to be seen as someone who was not doing their work and for some reason, I got it into my head that my work was more important than myself. It really took me a long time to shift my energy and honor my time and healing process. This is why I got into healing, not just because I wanted to heal myself, but because I also wanted to help heal others and help them open the door within themselves. Something I tend to tell my clients is that I am like an energetic locksmith, I can help open the door, but in reality they’re the ones who hold the key and have full access to their energy and healing.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hija De La Agua – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing I like about Long Beach is that It’s diverse, it has a strong LGBTQIA+ community, and this is random but there’s a lot of good vegan food here as well.

It’s really hard to say what I least like about Long Beach because I really love it here, there’s just something about Long Beach.
