Today we’d like to introduce you to Margo Spann.
Margo, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m proud to say I’m a business owner, award-winning journalist and soon to be certified DJ. I was born and raised in Wisconsin. I’m the youngest of eight. Apparently, my parents tried to single-handedly grow the population. Before moving to California, I worked as a TV News Reporter in both Madison and Milwaukee. I’ve won an Associated Press Award and three Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Awards. I also had an opportunity to work at several radio stations both on air and as a part of the promotions team. While I miss my family, I knew it was time to leave Wisconsin and TV News. I moved to LA in 2014, with no job, no apartment and not much of an actual plan. I fell into some work as a Brand Ambassador, and from there I became a Field Marketing Manager. One of my most rewarding positions was working in the marketing department for Nestle’s beverages division before they moved their headquarters from Glendale to Arlington, Virginia. When that position ended, a friend of mine approached me to help him with his social media.
After I boosted his Instagram, created an electronic press kit and other promotional materials for him, Cocoa Hollywood Media was born. As my social media marketing business began growing, I realized I missed being a reporter. So, I bought some equipment and started covering red carpets— just for fun. I still can’t believe some of the people I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing including legends like Lionel Richie, Bobby Brown and director Kevin Smith. I’m proud to say some of my reports have been featured back in my home state and as far away as Good Morning Europe, based in Lyon France. I enjoy owning my own business it allows me the opportunity to travel and pursue other passions. I’ve been making mixtapes since I was about nine years old and I’ve been professionally DJing on and off ever since. I was fortunate to land my first corporate client Metro by T- Mobile in 2018.
In June 2019, I enrolled in Scratch DJ Academy’s Certification program and now I am a graduate of Scratch DJ Academy, and I continue to work with Metro By T-Mobile doing in-store events. Scratch was created by the late Jam Master Jay of Run DMC. He wanted to give DJs a path toward a career as a professional. I am most proud of my philanthropy. My father passed away in 2001 and my family created a nonprofit in honor of him to award college scholarships to graduating seniors in Southeastern Wisconsin. I’m the C.O.O. and to date, The Rev. James W. Spann II Foundation has awarded close to $90,000 in scholarships and other educational resources to students who would not have been able to attend college.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! When Nestle moved their headquarters from Glendale to Arlington, VA in 2018 I didn’t have a backup plan in place. I was fortunate to land some freelancing writing and DJing gigs while I worked on grow my business. June of 2018 was my biggest setback — and I’m still recovering. I was involved in a serious car accident. Another vehicle made a left turn in front of me hitting my car so hard it forced me onto the curb and I hit the side of a restaurant in DTLA. I tore my ACL and had reconstructive in February of 2019. I’ve always been a naturally active person so when some of your favorite activities are taken away it can be difficult to deal with. I continue to thank and praise God that I wasn’t killed. He gave me the mental strength to keep moving forward when my body wasn’t able. My business has experienced some growing pains from being ghosted by web designer/graphic artist after I paid her to getting denied media credentials for events I’ve covered in the past. I’ve never been afraid of a lil adversity. It made me a better businesswoman. All of those lessons were blessings in disguise. Staying active with my family’s foundation also helped me realize there are people with way bigger problems. Taking the focus off me has helped me overcome some difficult situations.
Cocoa Hollywood Media – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Cocoa Hollywood specializes in helping clients create a strong authentic brand with or without social media. One of my clients has a physical store so their marketing needs are different from an online retailer. My business partner and I focus being a full-service marketing agency. We create everything from online content, building a website, to custom facebook pages and creating email I’m also looking to build more corporate partnerships and booking private events. I’m an open platform DJ, meaning I play music from different genres and I specialize in multi-generational parties. My live DJ sets feature a carefully curated mix of high energy music to keep you and your guests out of their seats and on their feet.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’ve been tremendously blessed. Winning awards as a journalist is near the top of the list. Working for Nestle was a great personal and professional moment. When I started there, it was only supposed to be a temporary position for six weeks. Seeing my first marketing client land their first TV interview talking about their book was a pretty incredible moment. Getting booked multiple times to play a DJ on the now canceled TV Show “Grandfathered” on Fox starring John Stamos. Booking my first corporate client as a DJ is my proudest moment for two reasons. First, because they loved my work, I was able to share the wealth and hire other DJs for them. Secondly, Working for Metro By T-mobile led to having a client fly me out for a gig. There are hundreds or even thousands of DJs in every major city so the fact that they picked me was a huge honor.
