Meet Makeup Artist: Astrid Reyes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Astrid Reyes.

Astrid is a rising star in LA’s fashion and makeup space.  We had the good fortune of interviewing her and have provided an edited excerpt below.

Astrid, please tell us your story.  How did you get to where you are today?

I’ve been in the industry over 10 years. Even after all these years my passion continues to grow. I always continue my education and I dedicate 100% of myself to my clients. Client satisfaction is of the upmost importance to me. I started out doing makeup for friends and family, that’s when I realized I could turn my passion into a career. I decided to further my education and I attended Joe Blasco Makeup Center in Hollywood, CA. From there my referrals continued to grow and grow. Although I paid my dues and did a lot of free work and trades I am now a celebrity makeup artist and my work has been published in magazines and seen on TV and movies. However I don’t just work with celebrities. I love to share my gift with everyone, I love working with brides and being able to share and be a part of their special day.

What are you focused on these days?

As of right now I am personally planning my wedding, so that is a big and exciting change for me. While planning my wedding I’ve decided that I want to focus on bridal makeup. So I have partnered with The Knot so I can start driving more bridal business to me. I am very excited about it since I’m planning my own wedding I can relate a lot more to the brides and what they’re needs are. I know how important that day is to a bride and I feel honored any time a bride hires me for makeup. This will also help me build a team of artist to work with. As of now I have a small team that I partner with on big jobs. Which is something that I like to do. I am always trying to help other artist by passing along jobs if I’m already booked. Or by bringing them on a big job.

Wow – congratulations on the upcoming wedding!  So getting back to how you got to where you are today, what have been some of the harder parts of your journey?

I would say the hardest time in my career was when I thought I was going to work on a big show but it never went through. That for me was very emotional, it almost made me want to quit makeup. But it was actually what I needed to push myself even harder in every way possible. It made me want to be better as a person and artist. That helped me get to where I am at today. It actually reignited my passion for makeup. I started to reinvest in my makeup kit, my education, my fitness and spirituality. I know that I can’t let one thing that didn’t work out the way I wanted to make me quit. I have learned to find the good in the bad.

Completely agree – finding the good in the bad is a lesson that’s relevant for almost all of us.  So what about the good moments, the ones where you felt like “wow – I’ve made it”

I actually don’t have just one moment when I felt like I made it. There’s so many! But the first one was many years ago when I was still working in an office and my career really started to take off. I asked my boss for some days off and I told her why. I got booked on a big job to go to Colorado to do makeup for a movie. She agreed to give me a couple of days off so I flew first class to Colorado and stayed in a beautiful hotel, yes call time was 5AM but it was so worth it. That same week I was flown back to LA to finish some work at the office and then flown back to Colorado (first class! twice in one week) I thought that was pretty awesome! That’s when I knew I could no longer work in an office and I had to focus on makeup full time. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. Seeing my work on TV and in magazines is so rewarding.
