Today we’d like to introduce you to Leila Brewster.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Leila. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
About ten years ago, I was playing professional soccer in Denmark and was deciding on what to do next as I had taken that road as far as it could go. I have two degrees, one in international business and one in marketing (pre Facebook and Instagram time) and knew I didn’t really want to ever work for someone else or climb a corporate ladder. I sat down and really thought about the things that I loved and that list came quickly to me. I love people, travel, and photography. The journey to find those three things in one package led me to wedding photography. I am so fortunate to be able to work with amazing clients on one of the happiest days of their lives, in places I only dreamed of going (and going to places I had never heard of) while delivering moments that people would value and cherish for generations. I wouldn’t trade this life for anything.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As with all contract work, the road goes where it tends to go. I have been so fortunate to have had a fairly smooth road and aligning my business with what I wanted early on has helped me to define my voice. The biggest obstacle has been placing my perceived value in monetary terms on my work and learning to deal with investment issues from clients. I have many people that love my work and inquire, but in the end don’t have the budget for what I provide and separating myself from that. I think this is something that ALL artists go through.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Leila Brewster Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in wedding photography with a bit of travel photography sprinkled in. I am most proud that I have built something out of an idea. I wake up every day and can’t believe this is my life. I am so fortunate. I have worked on six continents (anyone for a wedding in Antarctica…?) I have met some of my best friends from this work and have honestly learned so much about people and cultures and about love. I think my personality and my love for what I do sets me apart from others. I am in this for the long haul and could don’t ever see myself doing anything else.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think an honest love for what I do is my best asset. I am able to show up for every single client and give my all every single time no matter the circumstance. It has taken me ten years to get to where I am and I can’t wait for the next ten years to see where I will have grown to. I am constantly learning new things and trying new ideas and I am not afraid to fail. I also love feedback. I love knowing why couples choose someone else or I love knowing what my couples thought of the overall process and delivery. There is always room to grow and I actively seek that out!
