Meet Kat Mills of Kat Mills Photography & Write More. Wrong Less.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Mills.

Kat, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In middle school, I was gifted my late grandfather’s Pentax K1000 SLR camera. That camera went with me everywhere: a road trip to the Grand Canyon, Holland, Germany, Belgium and even to school. If I wasn’t using the Pentax, I had a disposable camera with me. I still have the Pentax but have since retired it to my shelf. About a year ago I was gifted a Bell + Howell film camera that belonged to a friend that had passed away. I’ve recently been playing around with expired film in this camera and have loved the results. In October of 2016, I had a close friend put the idea in my head that I should try out wedding photography. I purchased a Canon 5D Mark IV and got in touch with my cousin who is a professional wedding photographer. The next week, I was shadowing her at a wedding and I loved it. Since then, I have done over fifteen weddings, engagement sessions, boudoir sessions and anniversary parties. I’ve recently gotten into video as well. I purchased a Canon G7 X Mark II and have made highlight reels for a handful of events.

Before I was taking photos, I was writing. I started at a young age and haven’t stopped since. Throughout the years, I have created and sold sixteen zines, under the Write More. Wrong Less. name, filled with my writing. A couple of them have had photos of mine alongside my talented friends. If I go through something that inspires me to write about it, I will and hope that just one person can relate and know they aren’t alone.

Has it been a smooth road?
The struggles along the way were created by myself. There were times where I wanted to give up or not take the leap. What if I had never asked my cousin if I could shadow her at a wedding? I would have never been able to photograph weddings on my own and start to build my own name. I would have missed out on all the travel opportunities I’ve had & the people I’ve networked with. What if I didn’t make copies of a zine I wasn’t sure about? I was very hesitant to put out my latest zine because it was my most personal and vulnerable issue. A week after, I had a friend come up to me saying how she felt the exact same way after reading it and wasn’t sure what to do. I’m glad that her reading my zine opened the door for us to talk. I’ve been lucky enough to have a supportive group of friends who won’t let me get in my way.

Perseverance, encouragement, determination, passion, desire are all evident in the results of what you do. I have seen some of your work and a little of your writing, and what I have seen has been incredible and beautiful. Very well done; including the video blogs. The writing is a wonderful way to express how you feel and shows you are not afraid to be vulnerable. These are all excellent qualities.Very impressive. Very impressive
