Meet Jonny Hwang of 626 Night Market & OC Night Market in Arcadia and Costa Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonny Hwang.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I always remembered the night markets of Taiwan. My friends and I were always bummed there were no night markets in the US. The San Gabriel Valley has lots of Chinese and Taiwanese restaurants so I thought it would be great if there was a night market there. The idea was to provide a platform for local restaurants, chefs, entrepreneurs, and artists to show showcase their food, products, and talent.

We started with a couple events in Pasadena on 2012, then moved to the Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia. In 2014 we brought the night market to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.

Has it been a smooth road?
It was extremely difficult to sign-up any vendors for our first event. We almost had to cancel the event. Fortunately, the event caught on with social media.

Unfortunately, too many people tried to show up for the first event and many people were unhappy with the crowds. Our food vendors did great and all sold out but we ended up with hundreds of one-star Yelp reviews!

We bounced back three months later with a much larger space and more vendors.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with 626 Night Market & OC Night Market – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We run the latest night market in the US. Inspired by the night markets of Asia, we provide a platform for local businesses, entrepreneurs, chefs, and artists to showcase their food, products, and talent. We are best known for having hundreds of food stalls per event.

We are most proud of providing opportunities for people to launch their business or food concept at our events. It’s a low-cost way to get their products in front of tens of thousands of people.

Also, proud of our team that is very passionate and dedicated in providing the best customer experience to our vendors and attendees.

I think our team is what sets us apart–the customer service with vendors and creativity to continually improve and evolve our events for attendees.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Los Angeles and Orange County are amazing because there is so much diversity and activities. The diversity allows us to enjoy different cultures such as a wide selection of cuisines. Many people are open to exploring and learning about other cultures.

There is almost nothing I dislike!
