Meet John Gilhooley of Gilhooley Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Gilhooley.

John Gilhooley began his photographic journey in the late 1970’s shooting skateboard contests.

Growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles John’s subject matter has always been a reflection of his lifestyle, after photo school in 1985, the journey continued.

After a worldwide surfing trip in 1990, he’s been able to carve out a living shooting editorial and commercial assignments with portraits and live music as the focus.

Today, he divides his time with his editorial and commercial clients – has photographed over 150 OC Weekly cover shoots, Assignments for Modern Luxury Magazine, Culture Magazine, Global Trade Magazine and countless live music shows, festivals, and events.

Working with the people is what John enjoys the most – it’s still about the journey and the experiences along the way.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not a smooth road at all, the struggles I see as challenges and come with the path I chose and are a good chance to learn and grow, part of the journey.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m mostly known for my magazine covers, over the years, I’ve learned how to shoot portraits of people that are more about them than me, lighting and location are key.

Having the ability to work fast and under pressure is really important, celebrities are on tight schedules and getting in and out with a selection of options for my art directors to work with is what I do best.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was the leader of fun, from surfing, skateboarding, going to see The Clash, The Ramones – jumping off the stage or heading out to an art gallery or underground party in DTLA – I wouldn’t change a thing.
