Today we’d like to introduce you to John D. Aguon.
John D., can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born on Guam, raised in Hawaii, and planted my feet in Los Angeles with a BA in Film from the University of Hawaii. Since moving to LA in 2009, I’ve spent the last ten years working my way up from a production assistant to a Producer for established companies like Playboy, Bellator MMA, and Viacom. Most recently, I was hired as a creative producer for LA’s newest sports team Angel City FC, a women’s soccer team owned by Natalie Portman, Serena Williams, just to name a few.
I’m motivated by being one of the few minorities in the creative world. I look forward to the day where you can see people like me in executive positions.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My life started on a bumpy track as my parents had me at the age of 17 on a small island of Guam. After moving to Hawaii to live with my grandparents, who lived off of food stamps, I spent my formative years learning how to be independent. The day I turned 18, I found an apartment to live on my own. After going into credit card debt and drowning in college tuition, I decided to make the move to LA to pursue my dream in production. I remember times where I had negative sums in my bank account, sleeping in my car for a few days and showing up on production sets working for “experience”.
Angel City FC – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Currently, I’m working as a creative producer for Angel City FC. The first video I produced was the Angel City Anthem, which exceeded 1 Million views, so I’m pretty proud of that. We are truly the intersection of sports, culture and activism.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
That’s a loaded question. I held my dream job working in MMA and traveling the world with some of my idols, I’ve eclipsed millions of views on the content I created for some incredible companies and interviewed some iconic people. But, my proudest moments are when I’m at home watching what I’ve done. It’s hard to explain.
