Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessy Raspiller.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our story all began by accident. I had begun my yoga teacher training hours, without the intention of ever actually teaching yoga to the public. As fate would have it, I needed to extend hours of teaching to the community, in order to complete my course requirements. The path of least resistance felt like inviting my friends to the park to soak in the summer sun and flow through some yoga practices with me.
My dear friend and original founding member, Jen Spencer, noted that individuals that had never practiced yoga were rolling out mats and truly enjoying their experience. It was as if barriers… or in this case walls had been removed to people finding the practice of yoga in a peaceful outdoor environment.
Ventura Pop Up Yoga would launch six months later in April of 2015. Myself and founding teacher, Heather Perry agreed to offer two weekly classes. What started out as a group of friends “Popping Up” in our local community parks has turned into thousands of individuals finding the practice of yoga with us over the past 4+ years. Our weekly Yoga in the Wild class offerings expanded. We quickly added more classes and expanded our team of teachers.
In October 2017, we officially launched Venture Well Yoga. VW was meant to deepen our existing clients’ experiences with yoga. Helping clients find a new level of yoga. Our gatherings began with Yoga in the Wild retreats to the Channel Islands National Park. These adventures allowed students to test their limits and step out of their comfort zone. Our Yoga in the Wild retreats offer education around outdoor enjoyment, including introduction to backpacking, traveling to a part of the world that seemed previously out of reach, and generally just bonding with like-minded individuals.
In addition to our retreats, VW offers monthly gatherings, meant to connect individuals to a wider view of what yoga truly is. In the past year, we’ve hosted Blessingway Ceremonies, Full Moon Breathwork, Into the Wild Sisterhoods, healing/trauma release yoga practices, as well as online courses including our FREE online book club that allows us to reach beyond our communities walls.
As we continue to grow and expand, we look to ways we can enrich individuals opportunities to connect. We’re in the current stage of launching a few new pieces of the Ventura Well world.
We are now happy to say we now offer our group offerings on a private basis. We’re able to cater to the enriching experiences of breathwork, psoas release, Blessingway ceremonies, etc. in a customized manner to meet our clients’ needs.
We are also excited to announce that we have just launched our product and apparel line that lets individuals connect to their “Yoga in the Wild” experiences wherever they are.
Our vision is to take people into the adventure that this life has to offer. Life is a long journey. We hope you Venture Well.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think running a business would ever be considered the smoothest path to walk down.
In all honesty, the hardest struggles for me have been the challenge to surrender. Being a reformed control freak letting the visions unravel, the ideas, the growth happens organically.
Having a business plan is great and at times is necessary, but the invitation to allow has been the most powerful tool I’ve found in my business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Venture Well Yoga + Ventura Pop Up Yoga – what should we know?
We are blessed with a rich yoga community here in Ventura, CA. It hasn’t always been that way, and for a period of time, the community catered to a small market of individuals. One of the things we’ve always prided ourselves in was opening the door for everybody to try yoga.
Yoga can be intimidating practice. We all see the images of limber and strong yogis, but VPUY breaks down these stereotypes. We remind the community that yoga is not for a particular age group or body type. We’ve had yogis from newborn on into their 80’s join our practices. Practitioners Pop Up from around the world as they drop into Ventura for their vacations.
We offer an affordable and accessible opportunity for individuals to step onto their yoga mats. I can say with pride that our park classes with Ventura Pop Up Yoga has truly invited thousands of individuals to try yoga for the first time. Years later, we have a student based primarily on individuals that had never tried yoga before they Popped Up to our Yoga in the Wild classes.
Our Venture Well programs, in a way, are now an invitation for our yoga students to take their yoga practice to another level. We are able to create intimate gatherings and exciting adventures that are helping individuals shine light into the best version of themselves. Whether that’s taking a challenge, they may have feared on their own or beginning to heal trauma in order to step into their truest potential to find happiness in this life.
We love the ways that we get to connect with and impact our community and beyond.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
That seems like such a challenging question, and yet at its core, it’s simple. I just want to help people, I always have.
They say to ask yourself what would you do if money didn’t matter… THIS. I would be doing exactly this. Reaching out and touching individuals life in sometimes surprising ways.
