Meet Jason Shaw of Jason Daniel Shaw Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Shaw.

Jason, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I haven’t been everywhere or seen everything but it’s on my list…

I am a professional photographer based in Los Angeles but I suffer from what has become known as Wanderlust (a great desire to travel and explore)! This is actually what led me to photography. I first got into taking photos while documenting my adventures with traveling.

All of this started with an iPhone and I soon realized that I wanted more from my photographs and picked up a Canon DSLR. The photography bug continued to grow inside of me and I expanded my photography into more and more genres.

I am based in Los Angeles and I am also an engineer for an aerospace company. One of my main hobbies is flying as I am a private pilot (that explains the aviation and aerial photography fascination). In addition to aviation, I am also into sports such as surfing, SCUBA, canyoneering and just about anything else that lets me pursue my next adventure. I am always looking for new and interesting ideas for shoots.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle that I have faced is defining my photography work. I started with travel and adventure and have expanded into so many different areas that I am too fragmented and not focused on one particular thing. Right now, I am working to define what the future is and leaning toward working with departments of tourism and travel brands which is where a lot of my passion lies.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jason Daniel Shaw Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My photography business is a side business for me as I still maintain and love my job in the aerospace engineering industry. However, the photography is consuming more and more of my free time, which is a good thing. As I said, I am currently trying to define what my specialty is going to be but for the most part travel/adventure is what I am known for. This includes aviation and aerial photography. I think that my most proud moments are when my photos are selected to be featured in news stories or with other media outlets. My favorite so far has been a photo that I took during the Yosemite Firefall that was picked up by the Department of Interior and USA Today.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love LA! I really do. I moved to California from Florida in 2008 because I fell in love with everything there is to do here and the sheer beauty of it all. I said at the time that I would never live in LA, due to the traffic (probably the only thing I dislike), and moved to Carlsbad. I lived there for a year before moving to LA and now I couldn’t see living anywhere else. Anything and everything you could ever want is here or within a short drive.
