Meet Gowtham Namasivayam

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gowtham Namasivayam.

Gowtham, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and brought up in Coimbatore, a town in Tamil Nadu, India. I started my journey in the art of filmmaking at the age of seventeen by editing short films, commercials and music videos for inter-college cultural activities and events at my Med school.

My interests in this art grew deeper after I won the National Award at Manhattan Short India, 2014 for one of my earliest short films titled Oxymoron and sowed the seeds that later inspired me to venture into the show-business and move to the Heart of Film Industry, Hollywood, Los Angeles to pursue my MFA in Filmmaking at New York Film Academy and to bring my dreams to life as an artist and a storyteller.

Coming from a science background, I feel that I will bring a unique essence to my stories and establish my own style in my movies.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My professional life has never been easy, and I don’t expect it to be. The fear of failure and the thirst for success makes me wake up every single day with the same adrenaline rush to improve myself and my craft.

Moving from a developing country, I initially faced financial trouble as I had underestimated the cost of living in LA, but luckily my family helped through the struggle to bring me back on track.

Understanding my shortcoming and overcoming my self-doubt as an artist was the biggest hurdle which I think I managed to overcome with the help of my wonderful mentors at my film school for which I am forever thankful.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am planning to start my LLC under the name of Dr. G Productions, which I will be using to make my first feature film project titled Nightingale, which I plan to write, direct, edit and produce.

With my knowledge in post-production and having learned the marketing strategies, business and entertainment laws of film, I know I can make a marketable, artistic content that I will be proud of.

I feel I have a responsibility as a storyteller and hence my company will specialize in independent film projects with original ideas that have a message for the society or untold stories of the great humans that live among us.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I still remember the tears of joy that my mom had in her eyes when I made a movie for her and gave it to her for her birthday when I was around ten years old. It was a small movie with some videos of things she liked and me wishing her.

Back then, I had no I idea I would be here in Hollywood trying to bring the same emotions to millions of audience around me but looking back, it still inspires me every single day.
