Meet Glenn Suravech of Mosaic Sound Recordings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenn Suravech.

Hi Glenn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As like many others, my beginnings in the music industry started out as being a musician, specifically a guitarist. I formed a band out of high school in response to youthful angst and oppression by authority figures and loss, wanting to express myself through music. Later, I took on formal guitar training with a private teacher, examining the styles of jazz, blues, and rock. After a few more years, I also studied classical guitar.

Struggling to find a niche along with success in music, and furthermore, seeing many of my contemporaries move on in life to other things, it was clear that I wasn’t really cut out to be a guitar player. I had a realization that I could play the guitar, but not like those who were making a living in the music business. I didn’t possess the natural talent or drive for success of those who were “making it.”

This was the first pivot in my career. I decided to go back to school and study Recording Engineering at UCLA Extension Entertainment Studies. I went there for about a year-and-a-half and earned my certificate in Recording Engineering from the University of California. There, I was a student of working engineers such as Andrew Scheps and Ted Greenberg. Concurrently while obtaining my certification, I was also fortunate enough to be hired as a runner at Jackson Browne’s studio: Groove Masters in Santa Monica.

This was the next fortuitous event in my life that shaped the path of where I am today. I worked at Groove Masters for over six years. I was also lucky to have been able to meet, study, and work with some of pop music’s legendary engineers and producers: T-Bone Burnett, Elliot Scheiner, and David Bianco; and musicians like Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, and David Crosby to name a few.

After my stint at Groove Masters, I recognized a need to lend my training and experience toward working and producing up-and-coming Asian American musicians, some of whom include work with Abe Lagrimas, Jr., Cynthia Lin, U3, Taiyo Na, Magnetic North, Wastewomxn, Taikoproject, Hollis, Chucky Kim, DANakaDAN, Priska, and Run River North,

Giving back to my community through audio engineering and music production, especially in this time with focused racial anger and hatred toward Asian Americans, has rekindled my youthful anxiety.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The main challenge was finding a comfortable place to thrive in the music business. When I pivoted from being a musician to working in production, the struggle was to accept the fact that I was just a mediocre guitarist. Obviously, I’ve come to terms with that realization. And, also working with some truly brilliant musicians over the past 20 years has really helped to solidify the fact that I’m doing exactly what I should be doing; taking on the role of a technician who is behind the scenes helping to carve and create the sound that makes the face of the artist and their music.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mosaic Sound Recordings?
After working at Groove Masters, I started Mosaic Sound Recordings, with the idea of becoming a music production company designed to find up-and-coming talent as well as working with established, seasoned artists; providing support in songwriting, album production, recording and mixing.

From my previous training, my specialty is in recording and mixing; marrying my experience in working with analog, vintage equipment with modern digital recording techniques. We employ the use of analog and vintage microphones, preamps, consoles with digital audio workstations such as Pro Tools, Ableton and Logic.

What sets us apart is that we have the knowledge and experience of utilizing old-form recording techniques such as analog tape as well as being well versed in modern musical approaches like laptop and digital audio recording as well as mobile recording capability.

Simply stated, we take old school recording knowledge and apply those techniques to the new school world of music making.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
