Today we’d like to introduce you to Frederik Schulin.
Frederik, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Denmark where I finished my Master Degree.
After graduating, I stared up a pharmaceutical trading company build on a unique e-commerce platform and attracted $2 million in venture capital.
The company changed the pharmaceutical industry in Denmark because it broke a 500-year-old pharmacy monopoly in Denmark and made parallel import of prescriptive medication possible in Denmark.
I was offered an opportunity to leave the company and come to Los Angeles as VP of commerce for a clothing company called Rampage.
After 3 years in the clothing industry, I transitioned to the booming mental health treatment industry.
Many of the skills from the online clothing industry were considered a novelty in the much older fashion and slow moving treatment industry.
Utilizing the online marketing experience from the clothing world turned out to be very effective in the treatment industry and the company I worked for grew from 1 to 4 facilities at one point.
5 years as administrator for Bridges to Recovery and I took on a job as a consultant, helping other facilities grow and improve their business.
Finally, I ended up at Insight Treatment Programs where Anthony Lopez had built a fantastic treatment program for Teens and their families in Sherman Oaks and Pasadena. The program helps teens with mental health and drug and alcohol issues.
I found the program and everything that Anthony had built so amazing that when Anthony Lopez decided to step down I was granted to opportunity to take over and is now owner of the program.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The financial crisis around 2009 forced me out of the clothing industry and had to reinvent myself a bit to fit into another industry. It was hard as my visa was connected to my job so I had to resolve that issue as well as find a new job.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Insight Treatment Programs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Insight Treatment Programs is a program for teens and their families who are suffering from Mental health and drug and alcohol issues.
It is an outpatient program so the teens live at home but come to the facility every day to get support and treatment. We have two facilities, Pasadena and Sherman Oaks.
I have a business background and is not involved in the clinical work we do at the facilities but I enjoy being around the teens a lot and see them transition and evolve.
I grew up without most of the issues and bad experiences that our teens have had. I grew up with nature around me and has always enjoyed the outdoors.
I love to bring a bit of my passion for the outdoors and our environment into the program. I enjoy being able to show the teens some of the amazing nature around LA has to offer.
I hope one day we will be able to offer the kids to take several trips a year to remote places where they can experience nature in a new way. Where the can allow for nature to inspire them to do new things and break some of the unhealthy coping skills that they have learned.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I want to integrate the outdoors in a bigger way in the program. I want to ensure that there are more opportunities for the kids to be inspired by the amazing nature that Los Angeles has to offer.
I also want to ensure that our program becomes more available to other teens and their families.
Outpatient Treatment options for teens are limited and it should not be. Teens should get all the help that there is to offer when they go through rough times. The quicker we can diagnose and support the kids the better chance they have to live healthy and productive lives.
Support when they are still young is so much more effective then when their personality has cemented itself in and their unhealthy behaviors have become very hard to break.
