Today we’d like to introduce you to Filfury.
Filfury, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in the 90s in the UK’s second city, Birmingham… an industrial city with little creativity around me other than an amazing music scene. So it took me some time to realize I was destined for a career in art and design. But once I found my calling I ran with it – studying graphic design, evolving to motion design, live-action direction, art installation, and sculpture work. Now I spend my time doing all those things as artist/director FILFURY. I have to pinch myself sometimes – I’ve been really fortunate with what life has brought me creatively – I’ve enjoyed collaborating with brands I’d always dreamt of working with – my art securing dream collabs with Nike Basketball, Adidas originals, Footlocker, size?, Philipp Plein, album art for JHUS, MJ COLE, Sean Paul… and the directing side of things has brought me incredible opportunities with Rolls Royce, the US ARMY, Ford Mustang, The NFL, Ralph Lauren, UEFA… and of course, some fun music videos too.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Who wants a smooth road?! I’d say it’s been more of an uphill climb, with some moments to enjoy the view… but I’ve loved every minute of it. I’m super ambitious, more hungry than ever to improve my craft, learn, and grow. I love new challenges and chapters – I’ve moved about a lot from Birmingham to London, Sydney, Amsterdam, Brighton, and now LA… I’m on a personal quest for self-improvement, my own toughest critic – who just wants to make the best work I can… The struggles have been deciding which route to follow, where to invest my free time. I juggle being a director with my personal outlet as an artist. The classic battle of client-based work vs passion projects.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Mill to me is the biggest toy shop. As specialists in VFX, content production and creative technologies, we are a home to the most incredible, talented, passionate, hard-working artists – for me, it’s a dream, I get to bring my wildest ideas to life. As a Director at The Mill I’m a small part of the puzzle… I believe the people are what make The Mill so special and sets us apart. The level of craft and execution is second to none – as a perfectionist myself it’s inspiring to be around people like that.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Hunger. I’m greedy – I love consuming new ideas, new skills, new accolades, new challenges… If I wasn’t so ambitious, I wouldn’t have had anywhere near as much fun. I love what I do… I’m always thinking “what’s next?!”
