Meet Dr. Joanne Mednick of Serenity Trauma Healing Center in Pacific Palisades

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Joanne Mednick.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Having been a therapist for over 20 years, I have had the opportunity to work with and study many types of issues that my clients have experienced. Over that time it became quite clear to me that many of the methods employed by the vast majority of therapist were dealing only with the symptoms and behaviors and not truly getting to the underlying issues that manifested in ways such as various addictions, eating disorders, anxiety and depression. In parallel, I have travelled the world studying the newest and most advanced techniques available. In doing this work I have been able to create the Serenity Method, a unique integrated system of these techniques that have had tremendous success in identifying underlying issues and healing them which in turn allows my clients to truly heal at the deepest and most profound levels and move forward to be their best whole self.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the first year of the business there were some challenges. Getting the word out about the new techniques to reach the people that need them took some time and finding the right mix of people to deliver the Serenity Method at the highest level was time consuming. Fortunately I have found great success in both areas and the center has flourished. So much so that I am proud we are now CARF accredited. CARF provides accreditation worldwide so that those seeking mental health care providers are able to select ones that meet these very high standards and have demonstrated commitment to being among the best available. Building an organization that has attained this level of excellence and has been recognized as such is a testament to the foundation we put in place in the early years and have built upon.

Serenity Trauma Healing Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Serenity Trauma Healing Center is an outpatient treatment center that provides integrative psychological services based in Los Angeles and is the creator of the Serenity Method. We have discovered that with the vast majority of clients suffering from depression, anxiety, panic, phobias, troubling memories as well as a variety of substance abuse and addictions, often the underlying issue is an unresolved trauma. At our Center, our unique approach consists of multiple cutting edge trauma treatment modalities provided under the same roof to heal at the very deepest levels the trauma that is at the core of so many of these challenges. The Serenity Method.

We have found that many of our clients have tried treatment and programs with no success and have come to Serenity and at long last found the healing they have been searching for. While based here in Southern California our clients come from all of the United States.

Our mission is to help people who are suffering due to trauma, to re-establish a sense of safety and connectedness in the world by providing multidisciplinary therapeutic services in our Day Treatment Program and Intensive or Customized Outpatient Program

At Serenity Trauma Healing Center, we also understand the impact that trauma and mental health disorders may have on not just our clients but their families as well. Our Family Program is designed to incorporate family members into therapy sessions. Oftentimes, family members do not know how to assist a person who is struggling with the aftermath of a trauma. Despite their best intentions, they may even act in a counterproductive manner and, as a result, feel helpless. The Family Program educates the family about trauma and gives the family and client tools and coping skills.

The Serenity Method extends to Pain Management and is about easing the suffering of the physical pain and improving the quality of life. Effective management of chronic pain frequently requires the coordinated efforts of the management team. Our pain management team includes medical doctors, chiropractors, licensed psychotherapists, massage therapists, and movement therapists.

As our success with this approach has become more well known, we have taken on our greatest challenge. We have applied these cutting edge techniques over the last 4 years allowing us to become one of the foremost Psychological Trauma Centers dealing with military veterans from all branches of our military. Many of these brave warriors have returned from active duty suffering with PTSD and benefit greatly from the Serenity Method. In addition, we have pioneered treatment for veterans who have been the victims of rape in the military. This epidemic has become a significant challenge for our government and those who return with MST (Military Sexual Trauma) have found great healing in our program. We have since created a charitable foundation to assist the many many veterans who need this type of deep healing called the Serenity Trauma Healing Foundation. We are proud not only of the healing our therapies bring to our clients but feel honored to be of service to our veterans.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I often refer to Woody Allen when asked this question. Mr. Allen is fond of disclosing that he has been in therapy his entire life. That is success for the therapist, not the client. Personally, my goal for my clients is for them to be healed and to move on and have the best and healthiest life they can achieve. While checking in with a therapist over the course of one’s life may be valuable for some, I evaluate my success by how effectively I can get our clients to heal at the deepest levels and move on.

It is exceptionally gratifying to me to have clients who have been prescribed – and often over prescribed – a variety of medications in an attempt to ‘heal’ them – who leave our program with none or only a small fraction of these medications needed. This is a part of healing the underlying traumas that manifest themselves in a variety of ways that these medications are meant to treat but tend to address the symptoms and not the cause.

Unlike almost every other businesses, and I may be the first person you have ever heard say this while building a business, I personally strive for no repeat business. That is success. And indeed, the majority of our clients are referrals: friends and family from those who have gone through our program. I am most proud that our most passionate evangelists are our past clients.
