Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Cutter.
Devin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Born and raised in southern New Hampshire, I first got involved with video and photography at the age of fourteen making short snowboard videos friends. It was a visual medium I immediately fell in love with. I graduated from Keene State College in 2014 with a B.A. in Film Production. After graduation, I moved across the country to Anchorage, Alaska, where I worked as a photojournalist for two years with FOX and ABC. Television news vastly broadened my perspective of the world, allowing me to grow as a visual storyteller and employ new techniques behind the camera. Currently, based in North Hollywood, California, I work full-time as a freelance cinematographer.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it was not always a smooth road. There were many struggles along the way to get to where I am now, and there will continue to be many more in the future. That’s a natural part of any life and career path. Logistical barriers, geographical restrictions, financial difficulties, internal conflict, creative blocks — it’s all about determination and perseverance in order to navigate through those moments when they happen. Anything worth doing shouldn’t always be easy. I believe surrounding yourself with a core group of people you can turn to for support and counsel is also crucial. My wife is one of those people in my life — I would not be able to do what I do without her.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Devin Cutter – what should we know?
I don’t really have “a business” since I am a freelancer, however, I try my best to operate like a business would even as an individual. I believe as a cinematographer, it’s important to have a solid understanding and balance of technical understanding, creative vision and administrative organization/responsibility. When someone works with me, I bring my very best to the table.
