Meet Del Howison of Dark Delicacies in Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Del Howison.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Del. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We (my wife Sue and I) opened in 1994 after wanting to pick up some items to have around the house to reflect our taste in Horror. So we did a couple of shows (comic Book conventions) with a table and put items out to see if there were others out there with the same taste. Then one day I saw an empty storefront near where I lived and we leased it and opened Dark Delicacies with our own collection.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, the biggest problem was finding things to sell since we only had our own collection. Many of the items we sell today didn’t exist back then. So we did a lot of consignment early on to help fill the space.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dark Delicacies story. Tell us more about the business.
We are the only (at least when we started) and original all-horror book and gift store in the United States. We also carry many items made especially for us… The expanse of the retail items is incredible from Children’s clothing to essential oil blends from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The biggest piece of luck that helped us out was the luck of enjoying the horror genre and tapping into one of the most loyal and giving fan bases in entertainment. From the stars (actors, authors, artists, directors, composers, etc.) to the fans we couldn’t have fallen into a better field.
