Meet Anisa Abdullah of Girls Matter Too

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anisa Abdullah.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am 18 years old. I own two businesses actually, one of them being Girls Matter Too & Graphics By Anisa. Even though I am an entrepreneur, my goal is to own a production company because I’ve always loved creating, editing & putting creative projects together that have substance and power. As far as my brand which I mentioned first, Girls Matter Too, my main inspiration for starting it was to empower women of all different ages, backgrounds, shapes & sizes. I want women to feel appreciated. I grew up in a single-parent household, being raised by my mother. Seeing her take care of me & my little sister reminded me that being independent is key! Work hard for what you want, never let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do.

Stay on top of your priorities and make a way out of no way. I’ve always had this fuel for women empowerment, literally always. When I overheard people saying that a woman cannot be president, that women were weak or that women were only meant for childbirth and cleaning never sat well with me. I’ve seen women do the impossible, especially those close to me. My grandmother is another important woman in my life. Seeing how much she loves God and does great things for other people also reminded me again that women are way more than what others may view or depict of us to be. Us women go through a lot and I don’t feel we get the recognition we deserve at all. Society is so quick to put us in a box.

To dig deeper too, I’ve never really been a girly girl. I like to dress comfortably yet a bit stylish too. A lot of the clothes I like to wear, I don’t really see much. Girls are always expected to wear tight or fitted clothing which just isn’t me. This is one of many of the reasons I started my brand, to create comfortable clothing for other women as well while still motivating and instilling in them that they matter too. Women should not be pushed to the side, as if we don’t have opinions or things we want the world to know. You matter! Just as much as anyone else. You are no less than the person sitting next to you. You are strong, you are capable and you will flourish in life. But first, you must remember that God, hard work and believing in yourself is crucial to fulfilling your dreams and desires. But you can do it! Say this with me, I am a leader. I am intelligent. I am strong-minded. I am persistent. I am a woman, and I matter.

Has it been a smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is not easy at all. In fact, the road to success for anything you want in life is never easy. But it is up to you to put in the hard work and watch your dream become a reality. If life was so easy, there would be no excitement. In fact, there wouldn’t be any challenges, any real lessons to be learned, or any vital experiences to help get you to the next level. Before I started my business, I was working at a fast-food place. Taking orders everyday and sometimes dealing with rude customers. But I managed to save up my money and buy some of the tools I needed at the very beginning. After this, I created my website which wasn’t difficult at all because I’m actually a graphic designer as well. I created my IG page for my brand and that’s how I really started. I released my website on May 21st, I was so happy that day.

At first, I started selling shirts. I did drop-offs the first go round which was actually great because I was able to meet my customers in person and thank them for their support. It was exciting. I created my stickers, packaging, business cards and of course my shirt designs myself. I found myself getting stuck sometimes though because I wasn’t as consistent as I wanted which was because I had to think about what I was going to release next. I didn’t want it to be thrown together, I wanted it to be sharp and meaningful! For this reason, coming up with ideas took a bit longer than I may have wanted. I was thinking about selling journals and planners that I created myself and skincare because I knew those two things were crucial for women! To stay organized and to keep great skin. But I knew I needed to find a niche for myself, so I decided to stick to clothing. It was what I enjoyed creating best.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Girls Matter Too story. Tell us more about the business.
My brand name is Girls Matter Too and I sell clothing. Shirts, hoodies and overall apparel you can wear comfortably on a daily basis. As far as what I do, the list goes on and on! I am a Youtuber/ content creator, a graphic designer, a writer and an entrepreneur. As far as what I am most proud of as a company is most definitely the lessons I’ve learned. Seeing myself persevere through difficult times I can say, improved my character and made me remember I can handle anything that comes my way! There were so many great lessons that I will never forget. Now onto the last question, what sets me apart from others? A lot of people say, “well, I’m just different”? Okay, but how? For me, my mind is what I love the most. The way I think, how optimistic I am, as well as how outspoken I am. I love to speak my mind and most importantly, I love to work hard. I am nowhere near where I want to be, but I am on my past to success as of now. I love how independent I am as well as how serious I am about figuring things out on my own. I know that I am capable of any and everything, it’s really all about how you apply yourself.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I see my business flourishing for sure. But I know for a fact I will be invested in my film career, which is my first love! Yes, I love creating clothing that not only I love but also others love, but I know my purpose and this is just one of many. In five years, I’ll be 23 years old graduating from college with my degree. I’ll be filming movies, writing scripts, directing and producing. As far as my brand, I just want people to love it and really grasp the message I’m trying to convey through this. I not only want to sell clothing for my brand Girls Matter Too, but I also want to travel the world so I can speak to young girls about important topics, I want to have mentoring groups and most importantly, I really just want to give back to my community.
