Meet Alyson Mattoon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyson Mattoon.

Alyson, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for dance began in my hometown of Sedona, AZ at eight years old. Dance led me to the Virginia School of the Arts performing arts high school where I excelled for four years. I was lucky to get a job dancing professionally with the State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara directly out of school. Dancing professionally had always been my dream and Santa Barbara supported this dream for a decade. I knew I would need to transition out of dancing full time to something I could do for the rest of my life.

Becoming a Pilates instructor was a natural fit as I had been immersed in the Pilates method since high school and loved teaching. I transitioned to teaching Pilates full time in Los Angeles while dancing part time in 2010 and was lucky to meet studio owner of The Moving Joint, Alyson Boell-Marchand. After teaching all over the LA area I knew I wanted to move my business to one studio and TMJ was the perfect fit. Over the past few years I’ve created a cardio dance Pilates fusion class called BodyBPM™, acquired my GYROTONIC® certification and started teaching aspiring teachers in TMJ’s Pilates teacher training program. I’m now expecting my first baby in January and can’t wait to see what motherhood inspires. One never stops growing and learning in this line of work and I can honestly say I love what I do.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Transitioning from dancing full time with the State Street Ballet company to teaching Pilates in LA was a hard transition. I had always identified myself as a professional ballet dancer and I had been missing company life. I think most dancers go through this identity crisis at some point in their careers. Time turned what felt like a struggle into new opportunities. Now, I’m just grateful that I had the opportunity to dance for as long as I did.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is professional and encouraging Pilates, GYROTONIC, and Dance instruction for all abilities. I’m most proud of my students; witnessing their growth and confidence is everything to me. I think my energy, keen attention to detail, and positive nature sets me apart from others. My goal is to empower people through movement and help them live happier in their bodies.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success with happiness. I don’t think you can truly be successful without happiness. Of course, I’m looking for my schedule to be as full as possible but I gauge success by how content I am with what I’m doing. If I believe in what I’m doing and I’m putting my “all” into it then I’m successful.
