Meet Alicia Brockwell of The York Manor in Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Brockwell.

Alicia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The York Manor is part of Extraordinary Living – A Real Estate Collective based in Highland Park, Los Angeles.

In 2014, the Cultural Heritage Commission of Los Angeles declared The York Manor, built in 1913 by Train & Williams Architects was recognized as an official historical landmark. Through our efforts the 10,000 SFT lot and 6,000 SFT building will be preserved from future development.

When we found the manor it was in an extremely neglected condition and needed a complete overhaul. We decided to make is a cornerstone of the community and give back to our neighborhood by restoring it from top to bottom.

Today, The York Manor hosts private events such as Weddings and Quinceañeras, but we also host 501c3’s fundraisers, conferences, and other events that support our community. We believe it’s important to give back and create gainful employment at the local level.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, when a building is 104 years old the struggle is real when it comes to maintenance and upkeep. For the most part it’s been smooth sailing with some minor hiccups in the realm of updating the building’s basic services.

We have been open for about 18 months and are growing rapidly.

The York Manor – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The York Manor is a unique event space because we do not have many “rules” the way a hotel or catering based location would have in place. Our general motto is, “Respect the space and obey the law.”

That being said, what sets The York Manor apart is our flexibility. We think it’s important our clients are full self-expressed in their vision for their event. We call it “Design Your Day”. We allow pretty much any vendor to work on our property including food trucks. We have a stage that is great for DJ’s and Live Music, we have lovely grounds as well as a large main room with a kitchen and private rooms for guests to get ready on-site.

Our properties layout and design coupled with the location’s flexibility and customer service that sets us apart from the competition.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We have had several moments that have been amazing and rewarding. The proudest moment for the manor was when we received our historical plaque and was recognized by the City of Los Angeles.

  • Friday Nights rent for 8 hours at $3,000
  • Saturdays rent for 12 hours at $5,000
  • Sundays rent for 10 hours at $3,500
