Life and Work with Vanessa Raschella-Decker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Raschella-Decker.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started homeschooling my kids 10 years ago. My husband and I decided 4 years ago that we wanted to see what homeschooling through a charter school would look like. That is how we ended up with Gorman Learning Charter Network. We loved it and never looked back. After my first year with the school, I was approached by a friend and employee of Gorman to consider running for our school’s board. I decided to go for it and ended up being elected. I served my first year as a parent representative. My second year as vice president, and this school year as board president. It has been one of the most rewarding times of my life. I’ve grown and been challenged in ways that I never would have expected.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wouldn’t say it has been smooth but it hasn’t been bumpy either. It has been a learning experience through and through. I had no idea going into my term what it took to run a charter school. I learned along the way all of the big and little details that go into the day to day operations. And just how much our administration, teachers, and facilitator’s give of themselves. My advice to any young women starting out on any type of school board would be to get to know the people you will be representing, the employees and the families of the school. Their insight is crucial in making the best decisions for everyone involved.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Gorman Learning Charter Network – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am most proud of the education our charter school gives to children. We are not a traditional brick and mortar school. We give families the chance to homeschool their kids and also allow them to have a multitude of resources to customize that education. Every child learns differently and we make it possible to give kids personalized learning that will help them on their individual paths.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My parents always helped me strive for excellence. Whether it was in school, sports or just my day to day life. They were my examples of what hard work looked like and what you could accomplish when you gave a 100%.
