Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Gravett.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up with skin cancer always being a concern in my family. If you take one look at me, it’s not hard to notice that my entire body is covered with moles and freckles, in addition to being very fair-skinned. The combination of the two has always made me a very easy target for sunburns as well as skin cancer. It wasn’t until my family shared with me years back that my father had been diagnosed with stage-1 Melanoma when he was younger, that I truly began to understand the importance of protecting myself from the sun and the importance of going to a Dermatologist yearly for a check-up. I’ve had numerous moles removed from my body and tested for cancer, all of which were thankfully benign. However, this is something I will have to be cautious and mindful of for the rest of my life. Since it’s hard, and at times even unsafe, for me to tan naturally in the sun, I started to get spray tans. Having a tan has always made me feel more confident and I quickly learned I wasn’t the only one who felt this way. I decided to turn my passion for being tan and helping others into a business, and that is how my spray tanning business Summer Glow began!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The simple answer is-absolutely not! I first started my business back in January 2020. As we all remember, 2020 was the year we all got stolen from us due to Covid-19. Just two months after launching my business, I had to shut everything down due to CDC guidelines and the official stay-at-home order. I was devastated to say the least. I had just moved to Chino Hills and didn’t know many people, so I knew establishing a clientele was going to be a difficult in itself- but having to shut down entirely made finding and connecting with potential clients nearly impossible. I devoted the next six months during lockdown to brainstorming ideas for my business and even began researching and reaching out to manufacturers about creating a potential product line in the future. Although my business had to close temporarily (almost instantly after it opened), I forced myself to make the most out of my situation. It is what you do in the hard times and with the unforeseen setbacks that truly establish the outcome, longevity, and overall future success of your business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Summer Glow?
At Summer Glow, our goal is simply to make every individual leave their appointment feeling more confident and beautiful in their own skin-no matter what season it is or what occasion it’s for (Hence our slogan, “Summertime glow, anytime of year”!).
My favorite part about running a spray tanning business is meeting individuals from all different walks of life, with all different backgrounds, stories, and ethnicities. I’m so blessed to say I’ve gotten to meet some incredible men and women. This is what truly makes this business so special and meaningful to me.
Besides Summer Glow servicing some amazing individuals, we are just as proud of what goes on behind the scenes. Not only are we proud to say Summer Glow is a women owned business, but all of the services we offer are 100% vegan, pregnancy safe, and paraben/ gluten/ sulfate/ cruelty/ and nut-free. We are devoted to the health and safety of our clients and want nothing more than to deliver the best experience possible for every person we have the opportunity of servicing.
Some of my personal favorite services we offer at Summer Glow (besides our regular and rapid spray tans) are:
– Mobile appointments where a spray tan technician comes to a location best fit for the client
– Group tanning parties either located in-salon or at someone’s house, which is offered at a discounted rate for groups of 3 or more people (Perfect when getting ready for an upcoming vacation, wedding, or special event!)
– 1:1 Hands on Training for individuals interested in starting their own spray tanning business
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned thus far is to always remain resilient in pursuit of my goals, steadfast in my vision, and to stay true to myself and my brand. When owning a business, more often then not, things aren’t going to go your way. Looking at obstacles as potential lessons and opportunities for growth, instead of as setbacks, has allowed me to always keep a positive outlook and mindset through every season my business has encountered.
I’ve learned that our mindset determines the outcome of everything in our lives. For this reason, always stay positive, and remain true to who you are as a person, and always look at life as if the glass is half-full. Never give up hope, never stop believing in yourself, be a light to others, and always continue to have unwavering faith that God has placed you exactly where you’re meant to be, and will take you to exactly where you’re praying to go. It is never too late to discover your true purpose and calling in life!
