Inspiring Conversations with Natasha Berteloot of H-ART Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Berteloot.

Hi Natasha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since I was a child I always had a passion for art. I dreamed of becoming a professional artist. But I was stifled by my own feelings of inadequacy. Eventually pushing all my artistic dreams aside I ended up working for Corporate America in a position that paid the coveted 6 figures. But, it just did not feed me creatively. I felt like we all spend way too much time at work to not enjoy what we do. I needed to find work that I would enjoy waking up to. Something that would feed my soul. After working part-time as an Art Instructor for children my self-confidence grew. Teaching helped me to rekindle my passion for the arts. As I was teaching the children I began to personally experience the power of art in my own life and theirs.

I took a leap of faith and jumped on the opportunity to purchase an after-school art franchise. 8 years later, COVID happened and almost overnight my business went underwater. The schools were one of the first things to close and the last to reopen. For two years my company didn’t make any money. So I had to pivot and decide on my next move. During my pandemic downtime, I completed my degree in Education and Counseling. As I dived more into counseling I wanted to open a new business where I didn’t have the restrictions and stipulations imposed by a franchise. I wanted to stretch my arms having more creative freedom to spread the love of art to everyone no longer being limited to only working with children. We have all been adversely affected by the pandemic, and I wanted a brand that focused on the overall recovery and health and wellness of business professionals, family units, the elderly, and children alike. We show and prove that art is not only naturally therapeutic but is a skill that can be cultivated by anyone. I believe that art is therapy for your heart so that is how I came up with the name and the soul behind the brand H-art Therapy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have definitely been many bumps in the road. I think that is the case though with any new business, but challenges help you to grow. Unlike running a franchise there was no blueprint for me. I had to build everything from the ground up. As a small business owner, you don’t wear a lot of hats you wear ALL the hats. This was a challenge for me because I am such a creative that developing the business side of things does not come easy for me. I really had to force myself to work on those mundane tasks. But I realized that once I have developed a strong system I just have to maintain so I pushed through.

It was a scary time because many businesses in the surrounding area had closed down due to the pandemic, which made me question if it was a good idea to keep moving forward. And after two years of not earning income in my previous business, my budget was slim to none. So I partnered with local businesses to host events in different venues to help drive traffic to their locations. Thankfully they welcomed me with open arms and we have been a support system for each other. Small businesses are the backbone of the community and it was important for us to come together so that we could all thrive.

Also, my sister at the time had embarked on a new creative journey and I wanted to see how I could support her in her adventure. She was getting into photography and started her own company @rawhimages I thought it would be perfect to have her on board. She has really been instrumental in making my brand stand out as different. Photos help others to see the value in our service. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. We were offering services that other paint party companies don’t have. We focus on the overall mental health and wellness aspects that we all need after the difficult two years we all had. We now offer photo booth services for our in-person events which include fun props and a professional photographer. She gives amazing direction and helps people to feel comfortable in front of the camera which helps to build self-esteem and self-confidence. It also allows our customers to focus on having a good time because they know we will capture all the fun moments for them, and enable them to look back at their creative growth.

I am sure there will continue to be more challenges that will provide more opportunities for us to grow stronger.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about H-ART Therapy?
It was not until I had picked up a paintbrush for the first time did I truly feel I had discovered my creative passion and the full therapeutic benefits of art. At that time I didn’t realize how it would forever change my direction in life. Art helped me to face my fears with child-like determination. H-art Therapy pronounced “heart therapy” is a full-scale paint party and art education service. A place where I was able to merge two fields that I love art education and wellness. After experiencing firsthand how art helps to cultivate creativity, relieve stress, promote patience, and spark joy I wanted to bottle it up and share it with others. We are passionate about encouraging adults and children alike to push past any self-imposed limits. Many people feel that art is a natural ability and either you have it or you don’t. Don’t believe the hype. We have learned that everyone can and should create at least one painting.

Our Art Coaches utilize methods that take the stress out of creativity and guide you each step of the way creating an atmosphere for greatness. We host team building, corporate events, date nights, family functions, girls’ night out, private parties, children’s art enrichment workshops, and more. Our goal is to help you unleash the creativity that lies within. We provide a space for people to heal, build bonds, sing, dance, make happy memories, and boost confidence along the way. We make art happen while you enjoy food, beverages, music, and fun photos.
