Inspiring Conversations with Lena Reitz of Hair Boss Corp.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lena Reitz.

Hi Lena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my professional hair career at the age of 17. I was fresh off the greyhound bus from Texas to Los Angeles and I found a salon on Melrose to hire me. I learned more in-depth the trade of working with hair extensions and knew this was what I wanted to specialize in. At the time it was a far more niche area of expertise in the hair scene. I wanted to be “THE go-to person” for extensions in LA. I studied everything I could about all the methods available on the market until I eventually created and trademarked my own method called “Skinny Weft”. Fast forward twenty years later, and I’m still as in love and fascinated with my craft as ever. I gradually progressed into salon ownership, through years of working in Salon Management. I had worked with major big hitters in the Extension industry such as managing “Bellami” Beauty Bar which is when I recruited my two now business partners for our Hollywood Hair Boss Salon location, Cherish and Gaby.

I’ve opened two hair salons in the last five years. One in Canada, and one in Los Angeles. The first location in Canada was such a hit, and a testament to our signature extension method “Skinny Weft” being so successful. Opening location #2 in Hollywood, was a no-brainer. We practically hit the ground running!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have learned that founding and starting a business is never, ever, ever, ever, a smooth road! “haha”. You have to make light of it. It may look glamorous from the outside, but I’m here to tell you that if you are in your first few years and founding a new business, it is OK to feel like there are challenges after challenges to overcome. It is the nature of starting a business from the ground up. Most of us new entrepreneurs are figuring it out as we go along and are growing along the way. There is no one way to do it, and if you wait until you have it all figured out, you may never get things going. Even if you think you know it all, you will still be faced with the unforeseen. I heavily called upon the few business owner friends I knew for support and the strength to overcome the challenges and hoped that there would be a day when things got easier. I would say that it is true that you do learn to overcome challenges with a thicker skin, but you have to work at it. You have to learn how to problem-solve and become solution-oriented. The obstacles don’t ever stop coming. It doesn’t matter how long you have been doing business, you just get smarter and more efficient and accustomed to problem-solving. There is a fine line between sinking and swimming and not everyone has the capacity, or tenacity to overcome all of the challenges you are faced with, but if you work through it, you learn resilience.

After a few months of opening my first business, I contacted a couple of former bosses and expressed my sincere newfound understanding and appreciation for their role as  business owners. You have a whole new perspective when you become a business owner yourself. I really thought about all the times that maybe I wasn’t at my best and may have acted insubordinate because I just didn’t have the understanding of the reasons behind certain things. I’ve seen reflections of myself in the employees I’ve had over the years, it’s all relevant.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was energetic, curious, and ambitious. My interests changed over the years, but as far back as I could remember working with my hands I was obsessed with hair. I also very much loved music and being a singer. I would practice my awards acceptance speech in the bathroom mirror while sitting in the counter sink when I was young. Tears and all! Haha. I was a competitive gymnast most of my life growing up, so I really loved performing in front of people, and was very competitive. I was almost always on that first place podium. I got used to setting my mind to an intention and making it happen.

The law of attraction started working early in my life. I got my first job at 15 working as a waitress, even doing graveyard overnight shifts. When I was 16 I moved into my own apartment. When I was 17 I moved with two suitcases and $300 bucks to Hollywood, CA. I was fiercely independent, and I didn’t believe in limitations. All is possible if you really wanted it and believed you could have it. Still the same way I feel today.
