Today we’d like to introduce you to Respite!.
Hi Respite!, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Respite! started around April of 2021. We had all met through a music program, but originally it was just Zoe, Madison and Aidyn jamming every week in Aidyn’s garage. This went on for a few months until we hit up Bella, asking if she wanted to jam with us too. We had our first meet on June 16, 2021, and the chemistry was undeniable. We then decided to form a real band which we called BAMZ at the time. After a few months, Bella’s mom eventually came up with the name Respite. We kept it because we liked the meaning; a brief moment of relief in the midst of chaos. From there, our main goal was to just play shows, as many shows as possible. We landed gigs at Chain Reaction, The Whisky A Go-Go, and even as big as the Riverside Municipal Auditorium. In that time, we also wrote an album entitled Cereal Punks. Today, we are continuing to play shows and write music, with shows at the OC Fair and the Glass House quickly approaching.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our biggest struggle over the past few years has been the COVID-19 pandemic. Being thrown into lockdown at such young ages was something that affected us individually, but it was inevitably what brought us together. All of us picked up instruments over the pandemic, which is what led us to form Respite! Forming a band in the midst of a global pandemic was a way to distract ourselves from the chaos surrounding us. In a way, we sorta formed our own respite!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a 4-piece band that creates music with fluctuating genres. These genres include ska, punk, metal, alternative, and many others. Our songs combine these genres in creative, exciting ways, which is what sets us apart from everyone else who creates music similar to ours. We never wanted to fit into a certain genre, but rather take everything we know and put our own spin on it; using it to make something that would define our sound as a band. This is what we are known for. The Respite! sound is different from anything else, and it’s why people have grown to love it.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Our biggest influences come from other artists. We all grew up listening to different genres, so when we started writing together, those genres shone through into our music. Some of our biggest influences are The Interrupters, Lamb of God, Sublime, Misfits and Slayer. These artists and many others influence our sound as a whole as well as our individual style. Our influences are what make our sound so unique and special
