Daily Inspiration: Meet Priscilla Chavez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Chavez.

Hi Priscilla, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was first introduced to baking/cake decorating when I was eight years old by my grandma Chavez, she would make custom cakes for her grandchildren’s birthdays. I always loved mine! It wasn’t until a few years later, at 11 years old, when my cake decorating journey officially began.

At the time, my siblings and I were living with my grandparents because we weren’t able to live with either one of our parents. Well one day while on a Michaels run with my grandma Acosta I noticed they offered cake decorating courses and in my 11 years old brain, I thought maybe if I learn an unexpected craft (for a child), like cake decorating my parents would be proud and things would go back to normal. Well it didn’t work, but it was okay! Because I ended up falling in love with the craft for me.

After each session to see what I was able to create was so rewarding and I was proud of myself. Over the next few years, I found joy in making cakes for family and friends, I took on a few orders here and there but for the most part, it was still just a hobby. It wasn’t until I was in college that BakeUp came about. It was time to find a job and the only thing I wanted to do was work at a bakery so I figured why not just start my own thing. I made an Instagram page for my cakes and almost immediately people started following and ordering!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As far as getting clients/orders, it was a pretty smooth road. BakeUp grew really fast, which I am forever grateful for! The issue I was having was trying to juggle being a full-time student and fulfilling all of the orders I had. Eventually, I was putting school on the back burner and putting all my attention towards BakeUp. I was getting so booked and busy with BakeUp that I decided college was no longer the route that I wanted to take. And trust me that was not an easy decision, I felt like I was letting my family down but eventually they got on board! Since then, BakeUp has only gotten bigger, more and more orders come into the point where I get booked months in advance. I’m so blessed!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in buttercream cakes, fondant cakes, cookie cakes and every so often, I’ll make an awesome set of sugar cookies. I’d say I’m most known for my custom cakes and my cookie cakes! In my opinion, my attention to detail sets me apart. I always try to go the extra mile to make each cake as perfect as I can even if that means spending an extra hour or two on it. I want to be proud of everything I put out! I’m most proud of how much my business has grown, I truly never expected or imagined it would get to where it is now.
