Today we’d like to introduce you to Chiaki Nozomi Sugahara.
Hi Chiaki Nozomi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been interested in nutrition and wellness from a young age. I think it all started from my father, who is a French chef in Japan. Food is a big part of wellness and nutrition, and he has always taught me that what you eat is what you are. I also learned from him that food is a form of art, and there is so much beauty in creating it. As I got older, I knew I had a passion for both inner and outer beauty and that began my journey into the industry. I became an aesthetician in Tokyo and realized that I wanted to expand my knowledge further internationally, so that brought me to the United States. When I got here, I studied Nutrition in college and went to beauty school after.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After enjoying many years of working with clients in an LA salon, I was able to learn so much and build many skills, but there were always struggles. For the first few years, I felt that my work was very mechanical, like I did not have much opportunity to connect with my clients individually since we were always moving so fast. After making more friends and developing bonds in the industry, my sisterhood group really encouraged me to get into the path of becoming my own business owner so I can build something of my own focused on relationships with my clients. That became a new struggle. Changing mindsets from being a technician to being management was not easy. Developing organization rules and systems were required. Working as business owner is 24/7, and there are unlimited things to do. But even through all the tough times, I have been enjoying this journey of ups and downs and have grown so much as a person. I have also met amazing people who helped me to overcome challenges, given advice, and provided support in my business and personal life. I’m so grateful to those people, and I was not able to succeed without them.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Nozomi Mobile Lashes offers a variety of home beauty services, ranging widely from eyelash extensions to nail, facial, wax, makeup, hair and more. Our mobile salon comes to you, and we drive to your house, hotel, office, offering a stress-free environment to relax and get your beauty services done. We give you a peace of mind and some extra time in your day. I am proud of that because I believe it is our way of empowering others and helping build confidence. A lot of our positive feedback has come from clients with children or tight work schedules and just don’t have time for themselves for self-care. Nozomi Mobile Lashes is not only my business, but I always envisioned it to be a community where people get connected, which is why I started it. We also just began collaborating with local businesses like mobile dog groomers, yoga instructors, and medical injection business because we love supporting local businesses.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something fun and surprising is that we recently joined the team of the very talented Kid Laroi and are working as his makeup artist, esthetician, and massage therapist on his upcoming summer World Tour! It has been such an amazing experience to see him at red carpet glams, music videos, commercials, and photoshoots and to be able to contribute and be part of the effort. This dream would not have been possible if I had not pursued my passion for being a small business owner and taking the chance to fail. For the future, I would love to continue developing intimate relationships with my clients and build Nozomi into a brand widely recognized in the beauty industry!
