Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Izzo.
Hi Angela, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey is a long strange trip I must say. When I was young, I started as a painter then began to study black and white photography in high school. At the age of 19, I moved across the country from Florida to Ventura, CA to attend Brooks Institute and major in Photo Journalism. Always fascinated with artists and bands, I ended up in the mix of the arts and music scene, touring, directing music videos, and living in recording studios. Still preserving my passion for painting, I began to dive deep into the art of Lomography and began to incorporate painterly compositions and textures in my work using in-camera effects. This aesthetic has become my staple, and combines my love of experimental film photography, fashion and art. I moved to Los Angeles in 2014 and the rest is history.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Moving across the country alone to a place you never been at the age of 19 was absolutely exciting. I look back and couldn’t believe how bold I was! Straight out of college, I got my first job with MTV News and I thought I had made it! Though, shortly after, the recession of 2008 happened and it was back to square one. I stayed consistent and continued to document the local music and arts scene. Slowly, I began to work side by side with artists like Linda Perry and shoot big names like Dolly Parton, LP and Jack White. It was the help of friends, artists, and muses along the way that transformed me into the photographer I am today. Having had worked for some of the biggest bands and having solo shows I am forever grateful for those who believed in me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Because of my report in the music and art scene, I began to develop leverage in the fine art and fashion world. I recently released my Tarot Series “Mystical Creatures,” that includes both a photography series, as well as a customized Major Arcana deck. The series was featured during my solo show in Topanga Canyon, and now selling on my website, and in Spellbound Sky, Silverlake. I’ll be showcasing a portion of “Mystical Creatures” in February at The LA ART Show which I am very excited about. I’ll also be partnering with Gold Diggers TV in February and featuring my documentary film “The Benders Circuit” that highlights the underground experimental, audio visual scene.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’d say that creating and traveling make me the most happy! I love meeting new people, being on the road, and discovering new spaces with my camera in hand. I believe the power of art can change the world for the better and bring social awareness to important causes such as human rights and environmental issues. My passion is to inspire communities with my work and strive to regenerate the world with photography and a little magic!
