Check Out Scott Banks’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Banks.

Hi Scott, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always had a profound passion for music. In fact, my earliest memory is playing drums on pots and pans in my garage when I was around five years old. Come high school, I fell in love with electronic dance music and the community that comes with it. I dove in head first and started to DJ with my childhood friends, Tom Cooper and Alex Duir, around 2013. Before I knew it, I was playing shows at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana, which jumpstarted my journey as a DJ. Like most music lovers, my music taste has evolved over the years, but I’ve always had an adoration for house and trap music. After years of DJing, I realized that I wanted to play original songs in my sets, which sparked my music production career. After countless hours spent learning music production, I released my first original song in 2018, which was a collaboration with my aforementioned childhood friend, Tom Cooper (Tom Rockamora). I haven’t looked back since, and my passion for music production and DJing continues to grow.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing worth doing is going to be easy. The music industry, and especially the dance music industry, has become increasingly over-saturated. Nowadays, it is vital to separate yourself from the majority. As a DJ, one of the best ways to stand out is to make your own music. When I started learning music production, I didn’t know where to start. The most challenging part for me was staying motivated, especially when starting out. In order to make any progress, you must put in the time and effort. One thing that helped me stay motivated was to avoid comparing my work to other artists in the industry and instead focus on my own progress. Even today, I still have a lot to learn, but I am happy with how far I have come and look forward to continuing on this journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I DJ and produce music under the artist name “ScottyB”. My main repertoire is house music, namely, tech house and deep house. My music production has evolved over the years in a variety of genres, mixing house, trap, and jersey club.

Since I started making music, one of my goals has always been to have my own “sound.” While I no doubt still have a lot to learn and a lot of work to do, I believe I am starting to find my sound. My productions focus on high-energy bass lines and groovy drums. I think one thing that sets me apart is my desire to constantly learn and actively seek ways to improve my production. I think that it can be easy to get “stuck” in your own way, and it can be difficult to break out of a certain pattern. When it comes to music production, it is so crucial to constantly push yourself to learn and evolve, otherwise, it can be hard to stay motivated. After about five years of learning to produce my own music, I am starting to see results that I am proud of, with releases on some of my favorite house music labels.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think that, in order to see real progress and achievements, you have to take risks. For me, I think the biggest risk I have taken is investing time and money into my music. Oftentimes, people will tell you that you shouldn’t chase your dreams because it is a waste of time and money. But if you really want something, more often than not, you will need to take risks.
