Tyler Martina of Mission Viejo on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tyler Martina. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
We have had the highest rated most reviewed tattoo and piercing shop in Southern California for about 8 years now. We have created something great in our community for our artists and our clients. It was always our plan to open additional locations, to bring our vision of what a tattoo and piercing studio can be to artists and clients across the country, and one day, the world. That being said, the task always seemed daunting.

Now it seems that the time has come to start expanding. Actually, our first expansion happened already when we took over the location next to us after it shut down. This allowed us to double in size and start offering piercing. Now, we have reached a point where we need to expand again, and this time it’s in additional locations.

This new location is in The Shops at Mission Viejo, and we are the very first full service body piercing studio in Mission Viejo. Next, we are expanding to 18 more locations throughout the west coast. This is huge for us, but as I stated before, from the outside very daunting.

So this my path now, opening 18 new locations of the next 18 months, bringing Mr. Inkwells to people around the U.S.. I am super excited to bring our brand and business philosophy to new areas, and super stoked to be on the path I am on.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Tyler Martina, I am the owner of Mr. Inkwells the highest rated tattoo and piercing studio in SoCal. We have also just opened a piercing only location in The Mission Viejo mall, and are planing on open 18 more locations nationwide in the 24 months.

At Mr. Inkwells we make tattoos and piercings easy. For our clients and our artists. We focus on education when it comes to body art. And we believe the ability decorate ourselves is something that makes us uniquely human.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering teaches you that you are strong. It shows you that you can handle the adversity that life throws at you. Suffering is kind of a blessing, because without it, you will never know what you are made of.

Suffering is a bad word for it I believe. Because it isn’t really suffering unless you interpret it that way. What it is, is a test. It helps define yourself and grow.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I rely on many ideas not my own. Ideas that didn’t specifically come up with myself. That is how humans make real progress. They piggyback off the ideas of others. They learn what has worked in the past, test it in the present, then if applicable, adapt it for the future.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel at peace when I’m learning, helping others, or creating something. If you ever feel off or out of it, I suggest that you do one of those three things, and I recommend helping others the most.
