Good morning Sam, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are crucial. I start my day with 20 minutes of meditation (I’ve been practicing Transcendental Meditation for 9 years). Then I grab a coffee and journal for a bit. Nothing super profound, just a brain dump inspired by Julia Cameron’s Morning Pages concept. Then I get some sort of physical activity in. This usually requires more than 90 minutes but if I can dial it in, that’s the goal.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an actor, musician and director living between Los Angeles and New York. So I don’t know if that makes me unique or just the cliche bi-coastal multi hyphenate but a lot has happened since the last time I sat down with you guys! Right now I’m working on recording my first EP and I am writing a play based on the sudden passing of my father this past summer.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Definitely the relationship with my dad. he and I have a very kismet dynamic. There is so much symmetry with our relationship. He always just loved me for being exactly the way I am. Now, without him physically here, it has really given me room to reflect on the type of people I allow into my orbit. Having a parent really SEE you for who you are and love you for it, that is the greatest gift you can give a child. Just inspire you to be even more YOU. It’s a beautiful lesson in self-love.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Probably the fear of rejection. Which I think is pretty common. It’s funny because it’s a fear that’s developed more over time as opposed to waned with age. I’m slowly getting better about picking myself up and getting back in the ring, but it’s tough out here! And the further I get in my career, the more I realize that rejection and success go hand in hand, you know? So, if you’re reading this and you just took a massive beat down, GTF back up! You got this. No one says it’s over except you. You always have the final say.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. Maybe almost to a fault. I will require massive amounts of media training at some point because my instagram stories can be UNHINGED sometimes (especially if I’m going through a breakup). If I bust out the Phoebe Bridgers, you know what’s up.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
Right after I get a really good afternoon meditation. It is truly the best feeling in the world. Sometimes it becomes a 20 minute Power Nap and I follow it with a little shot of espresso. Chef’s Kiss. Those tend to be my most productive hours of the day now.
