We recently had the chance to connect with Katherine Amaya and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Katherine, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
What’s most misunderstood about our business is that permit expediting is “just paperwork.”
In reality, we manage a highly strategic and technical process that sits at the intersection of planning, zoning, building codes, and multiple government agencies. Every project requires interpretation, coordination, and problem-solving — not just form submission.
As a women-owned firm, we also bring a collaborative, detail-driven, and proactive approach that helps projects move forward efficiently while protecting our clients from costly delays and compliance issues. Our value isn’t speed alone — it’s foresight, accuracy, and advocacy throughout the entitlement and permitting process.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Founded in 2021, Ocean Permits is a women-owned permit expediting and entitlement consulting firm based in Los Angeles, California. We specialize in helping residential, commercial, and multi-location rollout projects move through complex government agencies efficiently and with confidence.
Serving California, Arizona, Texas, and Central Florida, we partner with architects, developers, contractors, and business owners to navigate zoning, code compliance, and permitting challenges before they become costly delays. With deep roots in construction management, quality control, and agile workflows, our team delivers strategic, hands-on pre-construction support that keeps projects on track and moving forward.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I came up in construction management and quality control on government projects, in an industry where being a woman meant you had to be sharper, faster, and undeniably prepared. I learned early that credibility isn’t given—it’s earned through results. I was responsible for protecting milestones, catching risks before they became failures, and making sure complex projects met strict standards with zero room for error.
That experience shaped how I see the world and the industry. I saw how poor coordination and reactive problem-solving cost time and money, and I knew there was a better way. Ocean Permits was built on that belief—combining real project management experience, an agile mindset, and proactive strategy to move projects forward with confidence in spaces where mistakes are expensive and delays are not an option.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
here wasn’t a single moment—it was a shift. After navigating high-pressure projects and proving myself repeatedly in a male-dominated industry, I realized that the challenges I tried to minimize were actually the source of my strength. The resilience, discipline, and clarity I developed under pressure became my edge.
When I stopped downplaying what I’d been through and allowed it to matter, everything changed. I found my voice, set firmer boundaries, and and built a company rooted in respect and results.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I admire Ray Dalio for his character, not his power, because he shows how living by your principles can shape everything you do. What resonates with me most is his commitment to radical transparency and learning from mistakes—things I try to bring into my own work. He’s a reminder that integrity and honesty aren’t just ideals, they’re practical tools for leading well and building something that lasts.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Most people underestimate how much meaningful relationships shape everything we do. I’ve learned that when your work and the people you surround yourself with have purpose, success and fulfillment follow naturally.
