We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ian Galloway. Check out our conversation below.
Ian, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes, one of my recent accomplishments that made me feel proud was winning a magic award against many other well respected magicians. I feel proud every time I present my show to an audience of any size whether performing the full scale illusion show or more of a close-up show.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an illusionist currently touring for private parties, corporate events, and occasional public ticket sale shows. What makes my show so unique is that I specialize in dove magic and in the grand finale of that act the doves transform into a real snake with pyrotechnics. When someone watches my show the goal is for people to walk away truly having experienced many different positive emotions that will impact their life in some way.
I started at the Magic Castle in Hollywood at age 15 being accepted as a Jr. member. I am still currently a member there today. From there I began working in the Disneyland Magic Shop to perfect my social skills and then 3 years later I decided to take doing shows as a full time work. It was a rough start with years of stagnation, trying to find myself as a performer, working on my act to make it better (which I still do), and over a decade later I finally put together a show I can be very proud of. In face, I’d say its one of the most interesting shows in my entire industry and everyone should see it at least once.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mom and dad were very supportive in the early years of me getting into magic. I will always remember and always thank them for helping me become one of the most successful magicians in all of California.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Magic definitely helped me when I was a kid to relieve sadness, anxiety, and moments when I may have felt scared in certain situations. I was a socially awkward kid afraid of approaching groups of people. Magic gave me the confidence to approach a group and show them tricks to get accepted into the group.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Sometimes magicians over think a long drawn out presentation but lose sight of the effect and audience response. Many lose sight over the importance of entertainment value and emotional response to what is being done.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I will regret not going as hard as I possibly can to be as successful as possible. Not being known as one of the best dove magicians of my time.
