We recently had the chance to connect with Dina Braverman and have shared our conversation below.
Dina, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Unfortunately, I don’t think most people understand the breadth and scope of the Professional Organizing Industry. I love when I get the opportunity to educate people about the various specialties that encompass the Professional Organizing Industry.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Organizing Concepts and Designs, aka OCD, is a Professional Organizing Company specializing in Residential Organizing, Office Organizing, Move Management, Estate Sales and Estate Clearing.
The services that we offer are essential and are, in fact, a necessity for so many people and for so many different reasons.
What makes OCD unique is that we are a one-stop-shop! While we offer an array of services, our clients can utilize some or all of our services. They get to pick and choose which services they need based on their needs and budget.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
What a great question! When I was a little girl my family and friends all knew that I was super organized. It was almost an obsession. However, OCD wasn’t really something people were “diagnosed” with until around 1980 so we (me, my family and friends) never put a label on it. Everyone just knew it was my thing. I was teased about it but I didn’t care. My room, my stuff was always organized and it felt good to me.
When you’re young and everyone is telling you what to do and when, organizing was my way of feeling in control of my space and my belongings. My parents and teachers loved it because it was less work for them.
Thankfully being super organized, having OCD, has worked for me in so many ways.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I first started OCD in 2010 I was nervous about starting a business. I had always, 30 years, worked for Law Firms and was used to getting a paycheck every two weeks along with benefits. I wasn’t quite sure how this would work out.
I remember getting a call from a headhunter who knew that I had left my job as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal. She talked me into going for an interview with another law firm that did similar types of law that I was used to. I went to the interview and was hired on the spot. I actually took the job.
I went home and that night I starting crying. Every bone in my body was telling me that going back to work for a law firm was not going to work anymore.
The next morning I called the office that hired me and told them that I just couldn’t accept their offer and never looked back again.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Another great question.
I’ve been around a very long time. I’ve been working since I was 11 years old.
When I see a fad in my industry I instinctively know. For example…when Marie Kondo was all the rage I knew that her way of organizing wasn’t sustainable for the average person in this country. When my clients called and asked if I knew how to do what she was doing I took the time to explain that we didn’t offer that service and why.
OCD is all about organizing with the goal of being functional and accessible. We want our clients to be able to find and get what they need when they need it.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I think they would miss our dependability, honesty and work ethic, We always try to accommodate our clients and their schedules.
We love what we do and it shows in our work.
So many of our clients have been with us for many many years and sometimes for different reasons. Sometimes they need help in the garage, sometimes its the paperwork that has gotten out-of-control and sometimes they need help moving.
Whatever they need, they know that we can get the job done and that it will get done right and timely.
