Ashley, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I’m most proud of the stability I’ve found in creating a family. I try to keep my personal life pretty private but when people see me glowing from the inside, they should assume the fire was ignited by my husband and son. They are my home.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Ash Nicole, an International Faux Loc Specialist with over 20 years of industry experience. I’m originally from Decatur, Ga and I relocated to Los Angeles about 10 yrs ago. My work has been featured in various TV & Film projects all over the world. I created my brand, WrapCulture™ to serve as a braiding educational space and shop that emphasizes caring for natural hair, community, and self-compassion.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful had to be in 5th grade when I realized I could braid my own hair. I grew up in a family of women who all grew beautiful, thick long healthy hair. My hair texture, which I’ve now come to love and accept, didn’t resemble any of my family members’. The day I decided to pick up a comb I felt like I grew wings. To be able yo make myself feel beautiful and then eventually share that craft with others is quite rewarding.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
Any time I try to fit into anything that isn’t for me, be it a group of people or a pair of jeans, I fail miserably. I am so comfortable in my skin these days and I only gravitate towards things that naturally pull me. I used to care too much about being left out but now that I’ve been in those rooms, I see that I’m not missing much after all.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Fairness & autonomy. I care deeply for how people are treated and having the right to live your life the best way you see fit as long as you aren’t harming yourself or others.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
As far as work, absolutely. Some of my best work has never been photographed. I am in love with creating hairstyles and connecting with people. It satisfies something deep within my soul to know I’m doing something to make someone go into the world feeling more confident, even if they never verbalize it. You feel it. It’s electric.
The same goes for my personal life. You only reap what you contribute. If I expect the best outcome I need to be willing to offer my best effort to the world. I’m also firm believer in integrity. I want to known as a reliable human so I give my best, always.
