We recently had the chance to connect with Shelby Nolan and have shared our conversation below.
Shelby, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
I would hire myself. I bring knowledge and positivity. I love learning new techniques and meeting new people.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Shelby from Green Leaf Designs. In my late 20s I decided I needed a career change and i took a flower class for fun. I always had a passion for it. Then I found out my local community collage had a floral certificate program so I jumped right in. Over 20 years later we are still going. Our goal is to exceed our clients expectations while staying in their budget. We want to give everyone a beautiful event or wedding with our breaking the bank.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I grew up with a horrible stutter that really affected my self esteem. I used to really worry I wouldn’t be able to do anything for my self. Once I got older in my 20s I could see everyone had something they were or are insecure about. Slowly my self worth grew. Once I started Green Leaf Designs and started doing beautiful successful weddings my confidence grew even more. Now my stutter is practically gone. I still do stutter sometimes but for the most part it’s gone.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
One day your voice won’t feel like something you have to fight. It won’t always be like this. Everyone has something they’re battling, I promise you’re going to do just fine.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
For the most part yes. The public version of me is confident. I once had a lovely compliment from a client. They said I have a calm confidence. While the “real me” is the same. What people may not always see is the depth of thought, care, and intention that goes into everything I create
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes absolutely! I love completing tasks and challenges for selfish reasons.
