Rising Stars: Meet Zev Hattis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zev Hattis.

Hi Zev, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started taking piano lessons at a young age but didn’t like it. I just liked playing sports with my friends and didn’t want to learn classical music from a teacher. It wasn’t until I stopped taking lessons for a bit, stepped away from it, and started teaching myself the songs that I loved, that I fell in love with playing. One of the first songs I remember playing that gave me that goosebumps feeling was “How To Save a Life” by the Fray. I would sit for hours, bothering my parents, just playing it over and over.

Eventually, I discovered electronic music production and haven’t looked back since! It didn’t take long for me to realize that this is what I always wanted to do and that it let my creativity flourish in a way that I had never experienced before. I’ve had some successes along the way that have kept me going, but I know I have quite a long way to go. I’m just scratching the surface of what I can achieve, but I’m super excited about what’s to come.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course not! Being an artist presents different struggles every day, whether it’s getting stuck on a song, imposter syndrome, getting the perfect mix right for an upcoming show, or just finding the creative flow on any given day. If it were easy, everyone would do it. For me, I think one of the hardest things is constantly comparing myself to others.

I grew up playing sports, so it was always about being better than the next guy, but in music, I like to think it’s different. The dance community is great about building each other up, but it’s hard when you see others catch a wave you can touch but aren’t riding yet. Everyone’s timing is different, so it is important to love what you’re doing and work harder for those opportunities.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an electronic music producer and DJ, ( you’ve probably heard that one before), but I take pride in bringing organic raw emotion to EDM by infusing my unique production style and influence from other genres that developed my love for music in the first place. I strive to bring that uniqueness to all aspects of creating a song, from songwriting, production, mixing, mastering, etc.

I’m never afraid to learn more, and just keep growing as an artist. I also develop music software, so I work on music from start to finish. Nothing feels better than the feedback that your music is giving a fan similar emotions you felt when making the record.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My family has always been super supportive of me in whatever I’m doing, so I’m very grateful for that. When it comes to my music career, I couldn’t have done it without my childhood friends. I’m super lucky that many of my closest friends from elementary school are still my best friends today, and have been there every step of the way throughout my life.

I put out my first song in high school and it was terrible, but my friends posted it all over Facebook, supported me, and soon the whole school was listening to it. It has been that way ever since. They are the constant in this crazy up-and-down life.
