Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonia Hill
Tonia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. My mom worked many hours and my step father was a Merchant Marine. Their schedules imposed a lot of “home alone” time and because of this I had to grow up quickly.
I always knew there was a bigger plan for my life, a higher calling. Growing up I loved being involved in my community. I love people, hearing their stories and sharing mine.
Never being one to let my environment define me, as a young adult working my way through college I competed in beauty pageants, modeled, and took advantage of every opportunity.
As a product of LA, I recently decided to write a biography of my life to help our generation of young girls and young adults. I want them to see examples of mistakes and a few of life’s injustices, but learn how not remain or get stuck there. ‘Creating An Opportunity’ is not only my memoir, it is my platform to inspire triumph through transparency.
I moved to Long Beach and have been married to my college sweetheart for 32 years. We have three wonderful adult children and all have graduated from college. I have a Masters in Teaching w/ a Specialization in ECE, I’m a Principal working in education for 27 years, and Adjunct Professor.
At the end of the day God gave me a calling to people, education and making a difference.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A few obstacles would include busing in the 1970’s. As a young girl, this experience was my first 101 course of racism. I was bused to schools in the valley where people were not ready to digest this type of educational diversity. The mistreatment noted in my book has stayed with me for years, but in a good way. It has propelled me over the years to see all people the way God created them, as human beings.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the Principal of a private Christian school in Long Beach, Bethany School. Bethany is comprised of three campuses; Preschool, elementary and middle school. I began as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher and quickly transitioned in becoming the Preschool Director. I grew preschool from 4 classrooms to 6 with a waiting list. After 15+ years as the Director I became the school Principal. Bethany School has never had an African-American Principal in its 76 years. I am extremely proud of this. I am also proud of the rich diversity that exists at Bethany. We are a microcosm of Long Beach and a reflection of God’s mastery.
What sets me apart from other Principals is that my students matter. They all have a special plan and purpose in this world and it is my calling to cultivate excellence; academically, socially and Spiritually. I am preparing leaders at Bethany!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One book I’m reading is ‘Opening Your Presence: Presenting the YOU You Want Others to See’, authored by Greta Muller builds confidence and is inspiring for leaders.
I listen to and I’m encouraged by Pastors Michael Todd and Kenneth Mulkey.
My ultimate resource that allows continued growth is my Bible.
