Today we’d like to introduce you to Tobie Windham.
Hi Tobie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m an actor, director, creator, and cultural curator from Birmingham, Alabama. My mom worked at the county jail, my dad was a coal miner, and somehow, through the grit, the love, and the chaos, I found my way to the stage. I’ve always been obsessed with people: how we love, how we hurt, how we survive. That obsession turned into purpose.
I earned my MFA from American Conservatory Theater and have spent the years since building a career that refuses to fit into one box. I’ve starred in shows like Barry, Party Down, and I’m in the upcoming season of Tires on Netflix. I’m also making my mark in film, both in front of and behind the camera, telling stories that stretch beyond the expected.
I’m the co-creator and host of The Frogs podcast, an audio and live performance series that merges theater, culture, and community with comedy, depth, and celebration. I direct, I teach at the university level, and I build spaces where artists can be seen, heard, and celebrated.
My work lives in the duality of it all: the humor and the heartbreak, the silence and the noise, the raw and the refined. I’m not here to play it safe. I’m here to tell the truth, honor the craft, and expand the vision of what we think is possible.
I’m a husband. A father. And still that kid from Birmingham with a wild imagination, big dreams, and a calling that won’t let go.
I got here by taking I-20 from Birmingham to Los Angeles, and I’m just getting started.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the deepest struggles have been internal. Fighting self-doubt, managing family life while chasing a dream, and learning how to advocate for myself without shrinking. I’ve taken jobs that didn’t even cover travel just to stay in the game. I’ve booked roles and still had to figure out how to pay for my flight, housing, or childcare. I’ve taught college classes, ran auditions, then raced home to be present as a father and husband, all while wondering if this was going to be my big break or break me.
There were seasons where I felt invisible. Where I gave my all to the work, but the doors didn’t open. Still, I kept showing up. The showing up became the practice.
My struggles have sharpened my voice, clarified my values, and made me relentless about creating work that actually means something. Nothing about this journey has been smooth, but it’s been mine. And every detour and stretch of uncertainty adds something to the way I show up now.
I’ve been able to keep my integrity and dignity while building something real along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a storyteller. Full stop. I like to say I live in my Maya Angelou, I live in “the and” I act and direct and produce and teach, I’m the multi-hyphenate. I’m invested in creating work that feels honest, layered, and alive. I specialize in character-driven stories that hold space for duality, where power and vulnerability can exist in the same moment.
People often say my work carries weight. I’m a feeler and I don’t shy away from letting those first instincts show. I bring a kind of lived-in truth to the roles I take on, whether it’s comedy, drama, or something in between, dramedgy you can say. I’ve been called a shapeshifter, an actor’s actor, someone who doesn’t just play the part, but expands it. My career has moved across platforms, from network to streaming to live performance, and each time, I aim to bring a grounded presence that stays with people long after the scene ends.
Some know me from work that’s super funny. Others know me from stories that deal with trauma, family, and transformation. I’ve done projects for kids and families that required timing, vulnerability, and play. I’ve also done raw, emotionally heavy material where the silences say more than the dialogue. I’m proud of that range. And I’m proud that, no matter the role, my work carries soul.
Outside of performance, I direct and teach, helping the next generation of artists step into their full selves. My approach to mentorship is rooted in honesty, clarity, and empowerment. I don’t believe in dimming your light for a role or shrinking to fit into someone else’s idea of who you should be. My artistry is about expansion. Mine and everyone I work with.
What sets me apart is that I bring all of myself into every room: the Southern roots, the classical training, the real-life experience of being a husband, father, and working artist who’s had to make it without shortcuts. I show up with depth. With range. With purpose. And that’s what people respond to.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m always open to meaningful collaboration! Whether it’s acting, directing, producing, or building something from the ground up. The best way to reach me is through my team or directly via my socials. If the vision is aligned and the work has heart, I’m listening. Let’s get it!
