Today we’d like to introduce you to Teah Biviano.
Hi Teah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Cosmica began in late 2020, I had always dreamed in my heart to become a singer and be in a band one day. I was more introverted in school (I liked water colour paintings and kept to myself) I was a chubbier kid with only one or two friends. When I left school I studied Film and Television in uni as I lacked the confidence to pursue music. I always knew deep down I could look better, feel better and go after this with everything I had. It took time but confidence grew, my internal voice and vision were calling me more strongly each year. I got into shape and went after singing. I found band members who were the perfect fit for the first formation of Cosmica. I have an Italian background so the band name Cosmica is derived from the meaning “vast” and “oversoul” and Italian dance subculture from the 80s which focuses on music and dance as a shared universal experience (the famous Cosmic Club). Cosmica is the evolving story of a young girl who begins vulnerable, in love, crumbling, angry and then energetic and out for revenge and power. It’s a concept that’s always growing, bending and becoming.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Cosmica has re-formed over the last 12 months with really solid band members who are energised and excited for the future. We’ve welcomed Connor (bassist), Ethan (drummer), and Tyran and Luca (guitartist). Our sound has become more crisp, energetic and certain. We’ve said “see you later” to a little bit of the romance and instead, we’ve injected a whole lot of adrenaline. In the early days, the biggest obstacle was me feeling so apart from my vision. I could see Cosmica in my mind, I had songs written and ready to go but I hadn’t mastered the basics yet: stage presence, mobility, energy and confidence. Once I achieved some fitness, it was like a big whoosh of energy that fuelled the rest of this journey and made my crystal clear vision for the band come to life. I knew it could be possible, stayed focused (giving all my time outside of my 9-5 to Cosmica), found all my people, supporters and fans. The “set backs” are what have truly made us, we had to start somewhere and we were always going to evolve.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been captivated by the energy, recklessness and vitality of music and aesthetics from the Y2k/2000’s and 90’s eras. Everyone looks so free, empowered, connected and like they are truly existing in the world. Alive, sweating, sexy and impulsive. I wanted to bring that back in any small way that I could. Cosmica is breaking down the boundaries, for everyone who use to feel too scared to cause offense, mayhem or truly be themselves. Cosmica represents the rebellion, alt rock needs to be fun again. We are part of that. Injecting the best bits of the years gone by into the now. We want to make people feel something again, be present again and grab you from your day to day life. I understand phones and social media are apart of the system (I use to be so against it) but it’s a love/hate relationship because I love bringing our fans to the present but then I do have to recognise that we’ve found so many Cosmica fans BECAUSE of social media. We are using it for it’s actual purpose, connection, to find our people and create real life situations where we can all be together at concerts, gigs and shows. The social media equals the international mosh pits and that’s what we want. Real life, real connections, fun and forgetting the daily grind. Feeling free and joining the rampage.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
As cliche as it sounds, being authentic. Being raw and real is what it’s all about. Our songs send that message. We say what we mean and that is really resonating with our fan base. We are unapologetic, rambunctious, rude sometimes and alluring and sexy at other times. We don’t care, and when I say that, we want to inspire freedom and coming alive again.
