Rising Stars: Meet Steven Hankins of Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Hankins

Hi Steven, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Creativity wasn’t exactly a foreign concept to me in high school. I wasn’t just taking pictures; I was diving headfirst into the world of film photography, the kind where you developed your own prints in a darkroom – a magical process in its own right. I also had a great time filming video and editing, capturing the chaotic yet heartfelt energy of our church’s high school youth group gatherings.
This passion for visual storytelling stayed with me through college at the University of Colorado. Video shooting and editing became a natural extension of myself. After graduation, the bright lights of Los Angeles, the heart of the entertainment industry, beckoned, and I found myself heading west.
Fast forward a few years, and a spark reignited, this time during a Christian men’s retreat. While deep in prayer, I felt a clear nudge – a calling to pursue photography on a deeper level. It wasn’t necessarily about making it my sole income, but about using this creative outlet to tell stories through the lens.
Fueled by this newfound purpose, Steven Hankins Photography was born in 2015. Initially, I wasn’t sure what kind of photographer I wanted to be. But as I explored different avenues, I found myself gravitating towards the world of business headshots. And that’s where my photographic journey truly began – a testament to the power of both passion and the unexpected turns life can take.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been some challenges along the way. Since I haven’t quite been able to make all of my money in photography, I had to find some other jobs. Finding the other jobs that would give me the flexibly to shoot and also the income I needed has been tough.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Thanks for your interest in my work!
I specialize in headshot and event photography. What truly sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to client satisfaction. I go the extra mile to ensure clients are happy with their photos, whether that means extra time on the shoot or meticulous editing.
I’m particularly proud of a few projects:
• Shooting photos of actor Doug Jones, known for roles in “The Shape of Water” and “Fantastic Four.”
• Capturing the cover photos for the book “The Incredible Stories of Skid Row: From Homeless to Hopeful in the City of Angels.” (You can find more about the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Incredible-Stories-Skid-Row-Homeless/dp/0615492010)
• Taking a headshot for a friend that ended up on a digital billboard in Times Square! (Read more about it here: https://www.stevenhankinsphotography.com/blog/exciting-career-milestones-for-brian-lubocki)
Building my photography business has been a journey. I’m proud of the success I’ve achieved through SEO – people find me after searching online! While I’m constantly striving for even greater growth, the key for me is perseverance and exploring new marketing avenues. That’s why I’m thrilled to be featured on VoyageLA!
There’s always room to learn, and I’m actively seeking new clients. Whether that’s through SEO efforts like blog posts or connecting with potential clients on LinkedIn, I’m constantly working to expand my reach.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I read the Bible almost every day and that helps give me wisdom on how to live. Plus, encouragement to live that life.
