Today we’d like to introduce you to Pia Kamonsit.
Hi Pia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Thailand and have a business background with a major in accounting. After graduation, I went to work for a cosmetics company as a salesperson. I also had a part-time job as a cardio dance instructor.
I moved to LA ten years ago just to improve my English. In school, I had a chance to experience Yoga, Barre and Pilates. I couldn’t get enough of these activities and signed up for the teacher training.
I taught for free for a year at the Santa Monica YMCA in order to gain experience. It paid off! After that, I auditioned for a small studio in LA and went to work for them. Later I got to work for Equinox and YogaWorks. Working as a group fitness instructor has been a great way to connect with people. I made a lot of good friends through teaching.
Teaching is my passion. It makes me very happy to inspire people to get stronger, believe in themselves and maximize their fitness potential.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It wasn’t a smooth road for sure. I have struggled with my English and the studios where I trained refused to have me as a teacher. I thought about quitting several times but thank goodness I didn’t.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Yoga and Fitness Instructor at Equinox and Piayogafit.
I get so excited before every class, with a chance to meet new people 5-6 days a week. They can’t know what to expect, but my goal is to never let them be disappointed. And I always make sure they are safe during class.
It makes my heart full every time I see returning clients. Some people have been doing my workouts for five years. Sometimes I get messages from past students on social media from when I started teaching eight years ago who say, “I still remember you and miss your classes.”
I like to surprise people with new sequences, and think of new things to do with the props we have. Creativity and fun are the keys to get them coming back for more!
Teaching boosts my mood because of my students’ smiles, and they are always appreciative. Helping people change their lives through fitness gives me the greatest pleasure.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I have learned that people can change way beyond their expectations. The feedback from my students who didn’t believe they could do something, then going from zero to advanced, is very gratifying. Some who couldn’t do even one plank or pushup now do 8 minutes straight with me.
