Rising Stars: Meet Nathan Nourian of Panorama City, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Nourian.

Hi Nathan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised right here in Los Angeles, and in many ways, my path to orthodontics was paved early on. I grew up in a household of dentists—my father had his own practice, and some of my earliest memories are of spending time in his office, interacting with patients and pretending to help out. By the time I was five years old, I already knew that this was my future.

But getting here wasn’t always easy. I often say that I wasn’t naturally the “smartest kid in the room,” which meant I had to develop a strong sense of resilience and discipline early on. I had to work extra hard to keep up, a trait that carried me through my education—from earning my B.S. in Biopsychology at UCSB to obtaining my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at USC, where I eventually earned the Dean’s Research Award.

After dental school, I completed a rigorous three-year residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the Georgia School of Orthodontics. While I loved the training, I knew I wanted to bring that world-class care back home to my neighbors in Southern California.

Why “Textbook” Orthodontics?

I founded Textbook Orthodontics with a specific mission: to provide the “textbook” perfect smile while removing the barriers that often keep people from getting treatment. I saw too many corporate dental chains where patients were treated like numbers, seeing a different doctor at every visit.

I wanted to build something different for the communities in Panorama City, Whittier, and the surrounding areas. My philosophy is built on three pillars:

Continuity of Care: You see me at every visit, not a rotating roster of staff. I personally oversee every adjustment.

Accessibility & Affordability: I believe everyone deserves confidence in their smile, which is why we focus on flexible financing and keeping costs reasonable without cutting corners.

Community Connection: Being an LA native—and a huge fan of the Lakers, Dodgers, and Rams—it means everything to me to serve the families in my own backyard.

Today, I’m proud to be helping patients of all ages achieve their best smiles.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overcoming the Hurdles

To be honest, the road hasn’t always been smooth. Like anyone chasing a dream, I faced my fair share of doubts and obstacles.

The Early Personal Struggle My passion for orthodontics actually stems from a very personal place. As a teenager, I didn’t have the perfect smile. I remember the feeling of being self-conscious and hiding my teeth in photos. That insecurity was a heavy weight to carry at such a pivotal age. Going through orthodontic treatment myself wasn’t just about straightening my teeth—it was a complete transformation of my confidence. That experience gave me a deep, personal understanding of what my patients are going through. I know firsthand that a smile is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about how you feel about yourself.

The Academic Grind Then came the academic challenge. I often share that I wasn’t naturally the “smartest kid in the room.” While some peers seemed to breeze through complex biological concepts, I had to put in double the hours. During my time at UCSB and later at USC Dental School, I lived in the library. I had to develop a level of discipline and grit that I rely on to this day. There were definitely nights where the workload felt impossible, but I kept reminding myself of the end goal: being able to give others that same life-changing confidence I had received.

Building “Textbook” from Scratch Finally, starting Textbook Orthodontics presented its own set of challenges. In a world increasingly dominated by large, corporate dental chains, deciding to build a private, patient-focused practice from the ground up was a risk. I had to navigate the complexities of running a business—something they don’t teach you in dental school—while refusing to compromise on my vision of personal, high-quality care. Competing with big corporations that have endless marketing budgets was daunting, but I bet on the idea that people would value a doctor who actually knows their name and their story.

Looking back, these struggles were necessary. They taught me empathy for my patients’ insecurities, the value of hard work, and the importance of staying true to my principles. They are the reason I am the orthodontist I am toda

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What I Do & What I Specialize In

I am an Orthodontist, which means I specialize in diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. My official title is a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. This distinction is important because I don’t just straighten teeth; I look at how the teeth and jaws work together to create facial balance and proper function.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Success is never a solo endeavor, and I certainly haven’t walked this path alone. There is a whole village of people who have supported me, challenged me, and helped build Textbook Orthodontics into what it is today.

My Family: The Foundation It starts with my family. My father, specifically, was my first mentor. Growing up in his dental office, I didn’t just learn about teeth; I learned about work ethic, compassion, and how to treat people with respect. He set the standard I strive to meet every day.

And, of course, my wife, Daniella. Starting a business from scratch is stressful—there are late nights, uncertainties, and moments of doubt. Daniella has been my rock through all of it. She sees the behind-the-scenes reality that patients don’t, and her unwavering belief in my vision gave me the confidence to keep pushing forward, even when things were tough.

My Team: The Heart of the Practice I cannot say enough about the incredible team at Textbook Orthodontics. Whether it’s in Panorama City or Whittier, my staff are the ones who truly make the “Textbook” experience happen.

They are the first smiling faces patients see when they walk in.

They manage the complex logistics so I can focus entirely on patient care.

They share my passion for treating every patient like family.

They are the ones who make our offices feel warm and welcoming, not cold and clinical.

My Mentors I also owe a debt of gratitude to the faculty and mentors at USC and the Georgia School of Orthodontics. They didn’t just teach me the mechanics of moving teeth; they taught me the art of diagnosis and the importance of evidence-based care. They pushed me to be a critical thinker and a lifelong learner, instilling the “textbook” standards that I named my practice after.

My Patients Finally, I have to thank the community. The families in Los Angeles who trust me with their smiles—and often their children’s smiles—are the reason I do this. Their trust is the greatest advocate I could ask for. Every time a patient refers a friend or leaves a kind review, they are directly contributing to our success, and for that, I am endlessly grateful.
