Rising Stars: Meet Myeko Smith of Carson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myeko Smith.

Hi Myeko, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am an African American woman who was born and raised in Los Angeles. I have 5 siblings who have always been very supportive. My parents separated when we were young children, which resulted in being part of a single parent household. At the age of 35 years old, our mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She went several forms of therapy to fight this disease but unfortunately lost her battle to breast cancer at the age of 37. I remember my mother being a strong and resilient woman who loved her children. I created this non-profit organization in remembrance of her. She was also a very giving person who loved people and her community. This is a way to give back to our community and to continue her legacy. I like my mother am a single mother of one son. And I know the struggles and stress it brings, having to do it all regardless if you feel like doing it or not. I wanted to give single mothers the support they need to succeed. We are in hopes of delivering excellent support to the community we serves. I also received most of my education in the South bay area. And we are in hopes of partnering with other organizations who will understand our mission and support us.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. But I’m thankful that I have met several business owners who have given me sound advice. It’s very important to network. This is how you grow as a business owner. I spend time reading, listening to videos and attending webinars to learn more about the business. I’m not too hard on myself because I know it’s still the early stages of development and things are getting better.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
By trade, I’m a Respiratory Therapist. I have worked in the medical field for 17 years. I love helping people of all ages and ethnicities. It is a very rewarding and demanding career. But I also enjoy giving back to my community. This is why I chose to start a non-profit organization to help those who are less fortunate.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am in need of start up donations, employees and volunteers for upcoming events. We would prefer anyone who has experience working in a non-profit organization. Since our organization serves single mothers and children, I would love to collaborate/ partner with other non-profit organizations who assist this same group of individuals. Groups who can donate items or support our mission. I am open to zoom meetings, email, on via phone calls to learn and provide assistance as well.
