Rising Stars: Meet Mengyao Hu of North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mengyao Hu

Hi Mengyao, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Ever since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by movies and the world beyond my own. My dad’s job was in Hong Kong and every time he returned from a business trip he would bring back a new DVD for me. It felt like getting a ticket to this more exciting, dream filled world called Hollywood! When I got the chance to study in the U.S. as an exchange student in high school, it was like stepping into that dream.
The U.S. became my second home ever since then. Maybe, because I picked up English by watching all those movies, I ended up majoring in Film and Media in college. I’m really lucky to have a family that fully supports my journey in media.
Now, in addition to filmmaking, I’m also deeply involved in e-commerce. I help brands build their presence—particularly on TikTok, where I get to combine my love for storytelling with the latest trends. Somewhere along the way, while working on some advertisements and promotional campaigns on e-commerce, I stumbled into the world of social media.
After I graduated it turned into this whole other side of my career. Especially now, with TikTok Shop expanding like crazy, I’m seeing a whole new way that people discover and engage with content. It’s changing how we promote and share things. For me, it’s fascinating to be a part of that shift. So, besides making films, I’m also stepping into e-commerce content direction—helping brands boost their presence, especially on TikTok. It is the perfect blend of both my love for filmmaking and keeping up with the latest trends. I’m hoping to use my background in film to create compelling TikTok videos for brands

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To be honest, when I was studying film production, I didn’t realize just how challenging this field would be. While I was in school, I focused on building connections and putting my all into every small project, whether it was assisting on set or taking on a project myself. I thought that simply going to film school and learning the craft would somehow automatically lead to becoming a big producer or director. But then the reality hit me. The long hours sleepless nights, and waking up every day to endless emails and paperwork became the norm. But, I’ve always believed in one thing: stick to the work that keeps you engaged and passionate.
Now, I feel like I’ve found a balance between work and life. I may not always create the next viral video, but I stay consistent with shooting and editing, and I make sure to communicate and learn from my team.
Managing an account and consistently producing high-quality videos every day takes a lot of energy.
Every month, I have to make sure I produce at least 60 short videos. E-commerce ads are a whole different beast compared to traditional TV commercials, they require us to think more deeply about whether the content of a video aligns with the target audience.
Sometimes, we think a video is perfect, but if the algorithm pushes it to the wrong audience, even if the views are good, it might not lead to sales.
It takes time and a lot of analysis to understand what kind of style truly attracts people.
Interestingly, sometimes the most genuine and natural ads resonate more with viewers, and you don’t need to rely on flashy production to sell the product. There is a lot of analysis needed to figure out the “why”. This includes many factors such as the content, quality, and even age of the target audience. Adjusting these factors allows us to maintain the best version of the video

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a film producer and an affiliate marketing content specialist. I specialize in creating content that combines my cinematic experience with digital marketing strategies, particularly for platforms like TikTok. My work revolves around crafting engaging, high-quality videos that not only tell a compelling story to advertise but also drive results for brands through affiliate marketing. While I have a strong background in film production, I’ve also honed the skills needed to optimize content for digital platforms and target marketing goals. I create compelling TikTok videos aligning with affiliate marketing strategies, helping brands boost engagement, traffic, and conversions. It is rewarding to see how my videos contribute to a brand’s growth, and I’m always striving to deliver eye-catching content and make products appealing to my audience.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I want to start with advertising because working in e-commerce feels similar to the film analysis process. When I watch videos, I’m constantly analyzing which influencers are subtly integrating ads, and I can often spot the products or messages that certain brands are highlighting. It’s fascinating to me how e-commerce platforms are reshaping shopping behavior and how they’re impacting traditional local stores. Online shopping has the power to spread quickly, and one of the big reasons for that is transparency. For example, brands can communicate directly with consumers, sharing real-time product details and pricing. Product discounts and customer reviews spread so fast, which is something traditional advertising couldn’t offer in the same way. The speed and reach of online shopping are groundbreaking, and I’m excited to see how this continues to evolve.
