Rising Stars: Meet Maurico

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurico.

Hi Maurico, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been doing music since I was like ten. In high school I was in a male/female rap duo that gained local radio notoriety. We had a song that stayed on the evening mix show everyday for about six months. I went on to be a solo artist after high school to explore more of my own musical talents. A few years into my solo career, I landed my first record deal with TN Recording company. This was an independent label owned by Kyle Cook of the platinum-selling rock band Matchbox Twenty. My career from that point started to grow. I released my first Ep with the label “I Am Maurico” and received lots of positive PR including an interview with Billboard magazine. Billboard debuted my first single and music video from my EP entitled “City Come Alive.” This release received rave reviews and brought along lots of other opportunities including sync placements on MTV. Following the release of the EP, I was on MTV and a few other tv stations competing in a band competition for eight weeks known as “American Supergroup.” This show was hosted by guest judges Jennifer Nettles, Aloe Black, Elle King, and Jason Scheff. The band I was a part of we’re winning each week and we’re slated to win but the show abruptly canceled for unknown reasons. From there, I completed a four year recording contract with TN Recording Company and decided to go independent. Now I’m fully independent and building my brand and company “Better Music. Better Life.” BMBL was created to influence listeners to live a healthier life, mentally, physically, and spiritually. We all know music is the soundtrack to our lives. The type of music you listen to usually dictates the environment, mood, and atmosphere you inhabit. Our goal is to make music that not only entertains but also influences a more positive and healthier lifestyle.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been smooth but it has been worth it. I’ve seen lots of failures and shortcomings along the way. Sometimes I even felt like giving up. There have been moments I’ve lost confidence in myself and my abilities to succeed. Music has always been my passion and although I may not be famous or rich yet, I still continue to do what I love. Sometimes I may take breaks to rest, restore and re-analyze my approach, but I continue to keep going. Music is who not something I do, it’s who I am. Each struggle has made me smarter, stronger and more aware of what really matters. This revelation alone is the beauty of it all.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a rapper, singer, songwriter and producer. Some would say a quadruple threat. I have the ability to write music that not only has a commercial appeal but also has a powerful message. Shooting my own music videos, cover art, etc gives me the ability to better deliver the artistic vision with more accuracy. I am currently releasing a new project December 31st, entitled “Keep Goin” this will be my 3rd solo album.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I feel like positive music will become more popular. Artists with a message will be the standard. Life is just a big cycle. I hope to see RNB come back and rap become lyrical again. Of course, it will be a different sound but the same concept and foundation. There will obviously be an advance in technology and how we consume music, and overall I believe wholeheartedly that artists will strive to be independent and not signed.
