Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlo Shears.
Hi Marlo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, cutting hair ran in my family. I would often get home from school and see my mother in our kitchen doing someone’s hair. Naturally at age thirteen, I began cutting my friends’ hair from home. By the time I was fifteen, I operated a hair business out of my backyard where I would both cut and color hair and used a water hose to wash out the dye from a client’s scalp. I can recall the parents of my friends being very angry with their kid’s new hairstyles. Mullets, mohawks, and bleached hair were highly requested at that time, and they still are! As time went on, my passion for doing hair grew and I knew that I had to open up a shop of my own one day. So, I created a workstation and began working from home for seven years. That was the time I met my future husband, who encouraged me to make my aspirations of owning my own salon a reality. Without the constant support of my husband and loyal clients, I wouldn’t have succeeded. So here I am today, owning LA’s one and only punk salon; New Rose by Marlo Shears.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a young mother of a son with autism, it was very difficult working a full-time job while going to college for cosmetology and always striving to be the best that I could be. I found it extremely challenging to juggle all three without even owning a car at that time. I dropped out of school from time to time when my circumstances became too overwhelming. Nonetheless, I remained determined to finish and eventually graduated and I got licensed. Now, I’m serving looks all day, every day.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in platinum blondes, extensions, and a wide range of alternative haircuts. I am most proud of my progression and how much I’ve grown as a hairstylist; being able to transform clients into a more confident and enhanced version of themselves by making their wildest hair dreams become a reality. What definitely sets me apart from others is that I’ve consistently kept everyone in the LA punk scene’s hair looking cool for over twenty years.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about my city is all the diversity and creativity my clients bring to the table for their future hair goals. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me with new clients from various cities throughout the world.
