Rising Stars: Meet Madison Montgomery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Montgomery.

Hi Madison, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
From the start, I’ve had an affinity for creating. I started singing in studios when I was five years old (a late bloomer I know.) When I was around eight, I discovered my love for the piano. Over the next 10+ years, I went on to play and sing in Jazz clubs all around LA. While I was performing and connecting with audiences, I was cultivating an even deeper relationship with my songwriting. Eventually, it became really clear that songwriting was the path all my roads led to. Now I do what I love most. I write for artists and film/tv sync.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a bumpy ride but I wouldn’t have it any other way. From a young age, my identity was almost expected. I had sung in studios, in clubs, in the Beijing pre-Olympics. I was going to be a singer. It took me years to realize my true love was songwriting-the story behind the voice.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I write songs for artists and film/tv/media sync. My specialty is Pop but my musical repertoire goes deep into Jazz, Indie, Soul, and Folk…Soulk? Though the genres I work/play with are somewhat eclectic, the common thread that makes a Montgomery song is the lyrics. I’m OBSESSED with words and putting them together to hit you right in the heart bone.

One of my favorite singles “We Look Good” was placed in the feature film “Why?” which just came out this May. Honestly, it’s the coolest thing seeing a horror movie set to a song I wrote years ago in my bedroom, no makeup, yes Led Zeppelin tee.

Any big plans?
Hit songs! I see those as a matter of time and sweat. I’ve also been working hard on my production skills and further down the line I’d love to get into scoring for films.

Short and long term, I have a list of instruments to learn – currently studying the melodica with drums up next.
